Running Apache on port 80 in Standalone mode?

Post by Frederic DR » Wed, 22 May 1996 04:00:00

I failed to lauch Apache on port 80... and, i run it from the root
(not so stupid) account. I set the User to guest and group to other.

The only message i have is in error_log:
 accept: Permisson denied
 - socket error: accept failed.

Don't let me down Pleeeaaassseee...

I run Apache on a Sequent under ptx 2. And for now, i use CERN Httpd
to redirect requet to another port (www.insys.fr:8010) where Apache
runs perfectly.

Thanks in advance

Er, you don't by chance, already have a server
(httpd) process bound to port 80?  When you attempt
to start apache, are you sure that the port is
free.  You can check by telnetting to port 80 of
the server and seeing if you get a "connection
refused" message...

That's your mistake. (PTX) Apache and PTX don't seem to get
along when binding to privileged ports.

No, i'm sure that nothing run on port 80... it happens always when i
use a port under 1024... i think that the father process that hear on
the port 80 (id root) give the hand to on of his son (id guest/other)
and this son don't have the right to talk on this port.

When i set User and group to root / sys... i have no matter, it's work
perfectly. but, for security reason, i hear that it's really not  good
idea to run httpd as root.

Thank's  for you'r advice.
