AFAIK, the standard mail utilities don't support attachments.  You
will need to get a mail reader such as pine or elm or gobs_of_others.

Use uuencode and uudecode :

uuencode(1)                 uuencode(1)

NAME
uuencode - encode a binary file

uudecode - decode a file created by uuencode

DESCRIPTION
Uuencode  and  uudecode are used to transmit
binary files over transmission mediums that do not
support  other than simple ASCII data.

If you just uuencode the file that you want to attach and append it
to your message then it will appear as an attachment if the receiver's
mailreader supports attachments.
