WTD: basic UNIX tutorial "learn"

Post by Russ Butt » Sat, 18 May 1996 04:00:00

Years ago when I was first taking on interest in UNIX, I worked on
an interactive tutorial program called, "learn".  It interactively
taught fun things like "ed", "ex", and "vi".  There's gotta be an
archive of this thing somewhere.  Would some kind soul please
give me a pointer?

I've cross-posted this request to more than one newsgroup, so unless
you want your reply to also go to the other newsgroups, you might
want to just send me e-mail.

Best wishes,

Russ Button

That's exactly why few if any vendors still ship it.  It's been obsolete for
over ten years.

OK.  I've gotten one pointer so far in that the "learn" program was
part of the standard BSD 4.3 distribution.  Might anyone know where
this might be archived?

Still lookin'

vi has been obsolete for over ten years?  And which planet was that on?

Just because there are more editors to choose from these days doesn't mean
that people don't use ed, ex and vi anymore.

In fear of repeating an editors argument - if the system goes down in a bad
way, it's not likely to have anything except those basic programs to edit
with when it comes back up - no X, no emacs just dependable ex and co.

As I am sure that other people will say, ed, ex, and vi are far from obsolete.
If I am called upon to work on a random Unix system and I must edit a file,
I can expect to find vi, or at least ed.  I actually prefer emacs, but I
cannot always have it available to me on a given system.  If you are in
single user mode because the disk controller that handles the /usr file system
has crashed (it's happened to me), you will be very glad to have vi
available to recreate files.

Hello,

Does any one know how can I convert the Tex DVI file to a printable and
previewable file.  I mean what are its drivers, from where and how do I
get them, README for issuing their execution commands and stuff.

I hope I am clear and would appreciate if you could tell me the Tex News
Group.

Have a good day !!!

Best Regards,

Miten Mehta.

There are several previewer for dvi-files. On the X-window-system
the most popular is xdvi. To print a dvifile you can convert it
to postscript using e.g. dvips.

TeX newsgroup: comp.text.tex

Maybe it would be more useful, if you go to the local system
administrator. If you are that person, you could get a LaTeX-distribution
like teTeX (available for unix-systems) or emTeX (for DOS and OS2) from
a CTAN server (e.g. ftp.dante.de) and install it. With these distribution
comes everything: tex, latex, metafont, previewer, printer driver,
dvi->ps converter.

If you *realy* want to learn Unix , get a Linux CD and (try to) setup
your own system on your own PC.

You are garenteed to learn a lot , or decide you didn't realy want to know.

P.S. vi is definatly not ded , but it lacks a few feetures
      ..like interaktive spell check ;)

Dear David,

can you recommend a Linux version, there seem to be many around.
I have come across Red Hat Spring 96 and Linux Slackware V3.0 at
reasonable prices (20 ukp), would either of these be suitable for me
to learn UNIX at home?

Take care,
Carl Parry.
