"sar" and "vmstat" gives allocation error

Post by Paul Lemmon » Thu, 06 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I have a newly installed 4.1.5 AIX system. I am in the process of setting
up some scripts that will collect tuning/capacity planning statistics. The
problem is that when I issue the "sar" or "vmstat" command I get the
following message:

#sar 5 5
sadc: read of genalloc structure failed: There is a request to a device or
addre
ss that does not exist.

#vmstat 5 5

kthr     memory             page              faults        cpu
----- ----------- ------------------------ ------------ -----------
r  b   avm   fre  re  pi  po  fr   sr  cy  in   sy  cs us sy id wa
read: There is a request to a device or address that does not exist.

Where do I go to find what this means? If you know, what do I need to do to
fix it? Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

It looks like a new kernel was installed but the system hadn't been
rebooted yet.

Hi.
Had same error when I unlinked /unix(link) to prove AIX does not need it
at boot time.
Something to do with the link or wrong kernel file.
Maybe you upgradeed the O/S and kernel but not the bos.perf tools?
Rebooted since?

Helpful, hopefully.
