Very Computer

I've aquired an old 320 circa 1990.
I have managed to manufacture a console cable for
S1 and have a dumb term attached. I've also make a
duplicate set of 2.4.3 diag floppies (thanks to
IBM for the disks and linus for a cool OS).

I also have AIX 4.1.5 on cdrom labeled "AIX V4.1.5
for 5765-C34"  (there's 2 of them)

When I boot the cdrom it goes along really well
until it stops at 517 on LED (nothing on tty) then
doco I have says this is trying to "mount client
file system during network IPL" I have removed the
MCA token ring card from the box.

Have also tried removing battery for 5 mins to
reset boot sequence (VPD boot list?).

Any help would be great.

These things are great jigsaw puzzles, just take
away the manuals, cdroms, cdrom drive, console
cable etc.

Before you buy.

   Stupid question:  Do you have the keyswitch in the "Service"
position?  Normally the CD/ROM isn't in the "Normal"-mode bootlist;
the flashing you see is merely the SCSI-bus reset.

Yes, I'm service mode.  With out the CD in the LED cycles around trying
to boot from floppy then hdisk then floppy etc. 253, 291, 252, 253 etc.
The hdisk is formatted and certified ready and waiting for AIX to be
installed on it.

   Well, it's certainly giving it a good try.

   You mention your CDs are "5765-C34".  The ones I have (which worked
on my old 930 (and, if I recall correctly, a 320 at work) are labelled
"5765-393" and are targetted for "G5 Processors".  Might it be possible
you wound up with PowerPC disks?  (Can anybody else answer this?)

Turns out the CD_rom I was using was not eaxactly compatible - not all
plextor drive are created RS/600 equal! and I have also acquired a
7013-530H (guess I'm moving up in the RS/6000 world).
Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

(3 wks on rs/6000 and learning heaps - great jigsaw puzzle)

I don't know that there are different CD sets.

AIX at work, OS/2 and AIX at home in that order.

The early v4 releases (4.1.5 or so), the AIX group tried to copy the big
boys (MVS aka OS/390) have have different price levels for AIX for
different processors.  They packaged the CDs so the server model had
all the code and maybe left a few items out for the 'client' version.
There is really NO big difference.

you want on your systems.
