185 is 'checkstop'.  This means that the hardware has a problem.

320H boot problem

Post by Bob Mariot » Tue, 06 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Tom;

This may not be your area a expertise, but...

The older 32H seems to be picky about what CDROM it will boot from.

I have several 32H's/34's that require reinstallation of 4.3 and from
CDROM.  I have two Plextor external drives (20x and 12x) that can be
booted from a 550 but the 32H will not boot.  Is there any parameter
that you know of that will allow a boot from these drives?

Thanks in advance for your assistance and if this is not your area
would you please forward it to someone who perhaps might be able to
help?  Thanks again.

A 100 indicates that all the BIST processing completed and control is passing
to the POST code.  If that were true, you'd see codes in the 200 range.  Is
you firmware up to date?  Did you take a power hit?\
Hm.. a 185 indicates a checkstop condition.  Can't help past this.

320H boot problem

It is indeed.  I have faint memories of problems booting 320's from
new CDROM drives that came with 'advanced machines' like model 350's.
These newer CDROM drives were 7210 002 (if I recall model correctly)
whereas the original 1X CDROM units were 7210 001.

We found if the 7210 002 was attached to a 7024 external IBM drive and
that 7204  was connected to the 320, we had no trouble booting.  I
found some documentation at the time that said that these newer drives
weren't supported on the 320 machines.

I have no idea why it worked chaining the CDROM after the external
disk, but if I recall correctly, it did work for us about 5 years ago.

320H boot problem

I ran across something like this a couple of years back and the answer
was that some OEM CD-ROMS will never be able to boot AIX on some
machines.  We attached an IBM 7204 CD-ROM and AIX booted fine.
However, you might also check the bootlist to verify that it has a CD as
a bootable option.
Best wishes,

1. Problems with booting an old 320H

I have a problem booting an 320H on an external CD-ROM (IBM).
I can boot on a mksysb tape, but when I try to boot on an 4.X
CD it won't boot. Im not sure about the microcode level on the
machine, but could that be my problem? That the microcode is to
old to support CD-ROM boot?
