Lynx problems after update (AIX 3.2.5)

Post by Michael R. Jam » Wed, 08 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Has anyone experienced problems after applying U445951 (fixes
ping-of-death problem) with Lynx.
I'm running AIX 3.2.5 on an RS6000 320 w/ 16Meg.
I can start up the program, but any attempt to get a file
via http gives me:  "Alert! Unable to connect to remote host"

I know from trying to get documents off my own machine that the
http server registers a request, but getting the data back to the
client (Lynx) is blocked for some reason.  Anyone have a clue
where to start.  I tried recompiling, that was no help.
This also happens with an older version of Lynx 2.4.2 that I
still have lying around.
I'm assuming this update is what brought the problem on.

BTW, Netscape works fine.

All you need to do is recompile lynx.  (Been there, seen that.)

The problem is probably in another PTF other than U445951
(i.e. a pre-req or co-req PTF).  I say this because I was
just checking this newsgroup for postings on this very topic
because we are about to put a new machine into production,
and on this new machine which is running AIX 3.2.5.1-02 the
same Lynx binary that runs on our current production machine
(which is running AIX 3.2.5.1) fails as you describe.

We do not have U445951 installed on the new machine.  Some
other PTF must be the culprit (like I said, Lynx runs just
fine on the other machine where the 3.2.5.1-01 & 3.2.5.1-02
PMPs have not been installed).  Some "fix" introduced between
3.2.5.1 and 3.2.5.1-02 has broken some portion of BSD networking
(or whatever you call it, you know: TCP/IP and "sockets" 'n'
stuff).

When you applied U445951, was it the only PTF put on or were
there any co- or pre-reqs included in the package?

We've also tried recompiling (compiling with no optimization
changes the behavior from immediately aborting with "Alert!
Unable to open startup file..." to it putting up the message
"HTTP request sent; waiting for response." and then just sitting
there).  We've also tried a newer version of Lynx (2.6 - both
compiled locally and the precompiled version from aixpdslib.seas.
ucla.edu).

I spent some time tonight trying to build a binary of Lynx
on the older machine that wouldn't require any run-time dynamic
loading of library routines (i.e. a self-contained, stand-alone
binary).  In the hope that I could use it to verify that there
is something broken in the library routines on the new machine.
I was trying things like:

cc -o lynx.abs lynx -lcurses -lbsd -bnso -bI:/lib/syscalls.exp

I even edited the src/Makefile to add the "-b" flags to the step
where the lynx binary is created and did a "make aix32" again
to build a new lynx from the *.o files.

I must be missing something, though, because my supposedly "static",
non-relocatable, no-dynamic-loading versions of the Lynx binary failed
the same way on the 3.2.5.1-02 system as the older (Sep 12 1995) Lynx
2.4.2 binary (that runs just fine on the 3.2.5.1 system).

So, is anyone aware of any well-known APARs for AIX 3.2.5.1[-01|-02]
that deal with problems in BSD networking ("sockets") library routines?

I tried searching the closed APARs database, but the problem with
that is coming up with the right keywords for the search!  (You can
imagine how many hits I got when I tried "broken socket connection"
as a search term!)

Sheesh, I guess now I'll have to learn how to use 'netpmon' or whatever
you use for tracing TCP/IP connections in and out of the box.

And, uh, Program Services for AIX 3 were discontinued as of Jan 1, 1997,
right?  Dang!  The earliest we'll be able to move to AIX 4.2 will be May
or June.  Oh, well...

Recompile Lynx with "make aix41" (i.e., with the AIX 4.1 options
enabled).  The resulting Lynx binary should work under AIX 3.2.5
or 4.1.  I believe the problem has something to do with the BSD=
define which slightly changes the layout of one of the socket
structures.

The first time I heard a report of this problem was when IBM issued
a notice a few months ago on a possible data corruption problem on machines
with L2cache installed -- installing the recommended software fix also
broke Lynx.

Recompiling Lynx on an AIX 3.2.5 machine with the command "make aix41"
will produce a binary that runs on both 3.2.5 and 4.1.  This worked for
me with Lynx 2.6.

Guys, I was so glad to see these posts! We have been having the same problem.
We have pretty much narrowed down the offending PTF to U444171.  This was
a pre-req. for U444252 which we applied as the fix for the 'ping O death'
problem.  We narrowed down the PTF by backing out a batch of PTFs one by
one which we knew had caused the problem.  After backing out U444252, the
problem was still happening so we backed out each pre-req one by one.
After backing out U444171 but before rebooting, lynx was still 'broke'.
After a reboot, it was OK.  (U444171 hits the kernel.)  I have called IBM
about this problem but they pretty much said that they wouldn't work on
it since lynx is not their software.  I also posted a question to

named Duncan Hill who I assume is one of the developers - so far no
luck.  If anyone comes up with a solution, please share it here -- I will
if I find it.

I also tried compiling lynx2-6 and then got the message 'HTTP request
sent; waiting for response' message instead of the 'Alert! Unable to
connect to remote host' message.

I tried this ("make aix4" on an AIX 3.2.5 machine after PTF U444171 with
Lynx 2.6) and it worked for us as well.
