CDC Wren III hard drive parking mechanism

CDC Wren III hard drive parking mechanism

We have a CDC Wren III that just crashed. Our tests indicate boot
sector 0 is bad. However, upon closer observation we note that
the clicks that normally occur when the auto head park mechanism
disengages upon power-up is not there any more, leading us to
speculate that maybe the head is stuck in the park position.
Is this a common occurence with CDC Wren drives? Is there a
simple fix?

Probably not actually 'stuck', more likely the stepper motor
amplifier blown. If you haven't done anything silly there's
a high probability of repair without loss of data.

We had a couple of problems with early models, but none have
so far done anything like that.

Yah, that's a good possibility.  We see a great lot of drives like that,
which are quite repairable/retrieveable.  What kind of interface does the
drive have (SCSI/ESDI/MFM)?  An MFM you can step around more easily and
look at the data.

The biggest problem with the CDC/Imprimis/Now-seagate drives, now, is
GETTING PARTS.  The takeover has really dinked up the supply, grumph.
Other than that, the drives are true gems.

If you are in dire straits, let me know.  I'll try to assist.

1. Parking hard drive heads

Hello people,

Probablly I am not asking in the right place since this is more
like an Assembler question. But is there any way (C or Asm), or
any program, that can park a hard disk's heads in Linux. I've
seen int 13h in Asm and know it can do it but I want to have some
more detailed information before messing at such a low level, I
might just park my disk's head permanently :)
It would be even better if I could turn the hard drive off but I
think that is impossible (I hope I'm wrong).

Thanks
