I'm working on a project to install a large number of RS6000 workstations
and Xstations into a environment that is largely mainframe based. As such,
the mail system of choice on the mainframe is OfficeVision (a form of
PS/CICS).

What I would like to know is what other people are using for a 'bridge'
between the unix mail (xmh/elm/mailx...) and the mainframe based mail
systems like OfficeVision. I know there are a number of products that
will connect unix type mail to PROFS but I'm unaware of such a thing
for OfficeVision (PS/CICS). Would there be some sort of X.400 gateway
that I could use ?

I would appreciate any info since I really don't want to use a PS/CICS
window on the 6000 as my mailtool !

Here we use RiceMAIL, rather than PROFS or OV. RiceMAIL is
free (for now anyway; hint: act fast) and widely used in the VM world.
Since you mention PROFS, I presume that you are in fact running VM.

RiceMAIL is the user agent. Transfer agents are SMTP (part of
the VM TCP/IP suite) and the VM Network Mailer (formerly know as the
Columbia Mailer, another freebe). SMTP can serve as a TCP-to-RSCS
gateway. But since OV is not likely to generate RFC822 compliant
headers, I hope SMTP wouldn't get too confused. Does that help?

Hello guys/gals,

I thought I'd take a free ride on this subject, giving it a small twist ...

I have some RS/6000s, happily interconnected by LAN.
I want to get/put mail to a VM system.
The problem is that I don't and will not have TCP/IP on the VM, and worse,
don't have the hardware on the mainframe (think it's a 3174, or work-alikes)
to make the link. I only have a COAX and a 3270 adaptor on my RS.

And now the big Q:

Can I somehow make my mailers (sendmail and friends) get/put mail to/from
the VM reader on the hardware I have?

I remember there was a UREP suite that worked w/ a mainframe through SDLC.
I might be able to get an SDLC line, but what about the software? Is there
a UREP for AIX? Anything else that does the same?
