Booting 350 on 8mm tape

Booting 350 on 8mm tape

Post by Andreas M. Hanse » Sat, 15 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I'm having trouble trying to boot from a system backup made on an ExaByte
8700 8mm tape, made with the system backup facility in smit on my aging 350
running AIX 4.1.4

The backup procedure runs without errors, and I'm able to list the contents
of the tape with smit afterwards, but the system will not boot from the
tape, when booting in service  mode. My servicebootlist should be ok.

I have tried the procedure on a 42P with the same tapedrive and same
OS-level, and here the system is booting and restoring from the tape with
no problems!

Does anybody out there have a clue, what the problem might be ?? - thanks i
advance!

Hello Andreas,

what blocksize do you use ? I think the older RS/6000 systems had a
problem to boot from tapes with a blocksize graeter than 512. Chnage the
blocksize of your tape via smit, make a new system backup iand try to
boot the tape on the 350.

Good luck
Bernhard
