AIX nfs server problems - rpc.mountd dies

Post by tashene » Wed, 26 Apr 2000 04:00:00

hello all,

i am trying to mount nfs from aix 4.3.3 to aix 4.3.3 using standard
procedures. however, rpc.mountd dies for some reason soon after the
subsystem has been activated. manual activation using

#startsrc -s rpc.mountd

or

#startsrc -g nfs

doesnt help either.

now, i verified dns to work properly, appropriate /etc/exports is present
on nfs server and /etc/filesystems on client and i tried running nfs on a
minimal aix systems with only necessary tcpip and nfs deamons
present. rpc.mountd just dies. i am wondering if it has something to do
with y2k issues because my aix boxes were working fine last year. the
whole thing stopped working after recent system crash, but has nothing to
do with the crash itself because i tried mounting nfs on a newly installed
and configured system. tried mounting to other boxes and to the same
box. the thing doesnt work.

did anyone encountered such problem recently? this year that is?

does anybody knows how and where to obtain debug info on rpc.mountd? i
know that appropriate option is

#startsrc -a -D -s rpc.mountd

but i dont know where rpc.mountd writes debug info. analyzing error log
doesnt help - the log contains only general info.

thanks guys for your help.

I'm having the same problem, rpc.mountd wont start.
startsrc -g nfs appears to start mountd but
lssrc -g nfs shows rpc.mountd to be inoperable
My dns works just fine.

Any solution to this, _please_

Cheers..

What says errpt to this point?
What is with portmap?

Which versions of bos.net.tcp.client bos.net.nfs.client are you using.
Are they latest. Which Maintenace Level ?

I've been working with IBM techs on this same problem on my server.  I've
got one server that rpc.mountd works fine, another that it fails.  When
looking at the error log it says something to the effect of srchevn.c (line
334) failure.  This was happening on another system but with rpc.yppasswdd
giving the same error in error log.  The IBM tech was able to get that
fixed, but he hasn't figured out the rpc.mountd problem.  Apparently there
are several with this problem.

AIX nfs server problems - rpc.mountd dies

Post by Song, Minsu » Fri, 07 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hello,

I had the same problem - starting rpc.mountd, but it dies.
I don't know what makes rpc.mountd fails to start, but anyway I've solved it
by doing
followings.

Quote:> lslpp -l | grep nfs

bos.net.nfs.adt            4.3.3.12  COMMITTED  Network File System
bos.net.nfs.cachefs       4.3.3.10  COMMITTED  CacheFS File System
bos.net.nfs.client        4.3.3.12  COMMITTED  Network File System Client
bos.net.nfs.server        4.3.3.10  COMMITTED  Network File System Server
bos.net.nfs.cachefs       4.3.3.10  COMMITTED  CacheFS File System
bos.net.nfs.client        4.3.3.12  COMMITTED  Network File System Client

Quote:> lslpp -l | grep libc

  bos.rte.libc              4.3.3.10  COMMITTED  libc Library
  bos.rte.libcfg             4.3.3.0  COMMITTED  libcfg Library
  bos.rte.libcur            4.3.3.10  COMMITTED  libcurses Library

bos.net.nfs.server version is 4.3.3.10 and bos.rte.libc is 4.3.3.10. In this
case, rpc.mountd
fails to start. Version 4.3.3.12 of bos.rte.libc also doesn't work on my
test.

So, I've patched bos.rte.libc from 4.3.3.10 to 4.3.3.14 (it requires
bos.rte.net 4.3.3.1.
so you should install this before install bos.rte.libc 4.3.3.14)

And, I've rebooted the system. (maybe it should or not, I don't know ;-) )

Quote:> lslpp -l | grep libc

BTW, I wonder why AIX's rpc.mountd is dependent on the version of  libc. :-)
anyone knows this?

AIX nfs server problems - rpc.mountd dies

Post by Andy Woodcoc » Fri, 18 Aug 2000 04:00:00

Good thing to check is that the loopback address is still in
the /etc/hosts table. enter "host loopback" if this doesn't resolve you
need to check that there is an entry for 127.0.0.1 loopback localhost in
this table.
Cheers,
Andy

1. AIX NFS problem: rpc.mountd dies

i was installing AIX 4.3.2 and AIX 4.3.3 on IBM RS/6000 machines and found
out that NFS would not mount due to the dying rpc.mountd daemon.

there is a solution to this problem, but at the present time i was not
able to narrow down the exact reason for this failure. it is either due to
dns mishandling or to y2k issues or both, because i was installing the
above versions of AIX last year and there was nothing wrong with NFS back
then.

at any rate, NFS can be fixed in the following way:

1. edit /etc/hosts and put IP addr and aliases for localhost and loopback
and host from which you want to mount nfs:

#more /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 loopback localhost
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx full.nfs-server.ip-name nfs-server-alias
#

2. check for /etc/resolv.conf, it must contain domain name and dns servers
ip addr:

#more /etc/resolv.conf
domain domain.name
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
#

3. add file /etc/netsvc.conf and put the following string there
"hosts=local, bind". it tells aix to resolve using localhost:/etc/hosts
file first and then go to dns.

#more /etc/netsvc.conf
hosts=local,bind
#

after that refresh tcp/ip and nfs daemons

#refresh -g tcpip
#sh /etc/nfs.clean
#sh /etc/rc.nfs

and try mounting nfs as usual. should work.

2. Is this a useless use of cat?
