Looking to buy a used RS6000

Hello people,

I am a newbie to AIX , just cleared AIX test 191 , was practising on a
old (leased from a friend)powerstation 220 for the test.

Now i am interested in getting a used RS6000 machine as i planning to
load AIX 5L, version5.1 on it and add it to my home network . of a
linux/2K setup. This machine will be mainly used to learn RS6000
installation/configuration(which i already know to an extent),
internetworkign with linux and windows platforms.

I found IBM RS6000 43P-100 100mhz/160mb/2.2GB/FD/CD on ebay . Will
this work with a regular VGA monitor?
I heard all the 43P's and above are PCI based and work with regular
monitors and keyboards and not IBM propriety ones. Please help , or
suggest a different configuration ,

thanks
spk

I suggest you a 43p-140. It's very cheap, better than 43p-100 and its
components works with aix 5.1.
Any mouse, keyboard and standard monitor works with it.

AIX 5.1 runs fine on a 43p-100.

I am planning to spend under $500 , i saw this machine for 43P-100 for
under $50,
but yeah , under $500 will do right for me for me .
How much would a 43P-140 come for ? roughly ? also i am looking for
two drives in the machine,(preferably 9gb ones) i think that will help
me practice and learn a lot of additional things coz i can try messing
with the spare disk

thanks

hello,
i've bought an used 43p-140 (200 mhz) a few month ago.

features (786 mb memory, 1x 2gb hdisk, 1x 4gb hdisk, 1  additional
ethernet).
this maschine runs fine with aix 5.1 ML4.
i wouldn't spend more than 300 euro (~300 $) if i were you, because a
cheaper 'n slow maschine
with less mhz will do for learning very well !!!

regards
peter

Be careful - If you ever plan on going to AIX 5.2, then you better not get a
43P-100, or 43P-140 - they are not supported for AIX 5.2, nor is any MCA, or
PReP system.

If you want to see the compatible systems, or not compatible for that
matter, follow this link -

http://www2.ibmlink.ibm.com/cgi-bin/master?xh=RqdSBkR3LG2Q9V2USenGnN9...

Be sure to check the adapter listing as well....:

If the link doesn't work, try www.ibmlink.ibm.com/ussman, and search for
5765-E62

-D.

Well, you're right. But if you want to run AIX 5.2 you'll have to spend more
than $500 !!!
The cheapest way to run an AIX >4.3.3 is to buy a 43p-140 !
AIX 5.2 is nice to run, but it makes only sence IMHO, if you run a
LPAR-system.

Peter

hello,

well, this price is very good. i've looked for such kind of maschine a few
weeks ago at ebay (germany).
finally the maschine (with less hdisk-space) costs about 700 euros. much to
much for a poor employee like me !!!

is there the licence for aix 5L included ???
i would have bought this maschine at this price, too, but i guess my wife
would have killed me, because i
always buy such "very useful" stuff !!! *g
