dataless RISC-6000?

Has anyone tried to make their RISC-6000 a "dataless workstation" ie. have
a local root and swap filesystem, but mount /usr over the net?  It's very
tempting, since the savings can be significant, but there's some things on
/usr that aren't sharable (for example, the database of LPPs), so this would
not seem possible in this release.  How about it Austin?

no go. sendmail modifies a file in /usr/lib, and that was just the tip
of the iceberger. someday, perhaps AIX will  have /var.

So, build a sendmail that looks for its files elsewhere.  In order to keep
things running smoothly at my site I run the same sendmail everywhere.  This
eliminates having to handle each company's "improvements" to the software
and the config files.  I'm presently running sendmail 5.65 on my '6000 with
only a few changes (mostly bug fixes to sendmail).

Another option would be to use symbolic links in the place of the changing
files and move the actual files to "/var" or wherever.

I presume that the original poster wanted to know if it could be done
simply and straightforwardly. Of course, if you want to spend a week
on it, you can revise the hierarchy and any number of programs
to make this work. Good luck when the next patch tape rolls in.
