Getting an 8-port async adapter to work

Getting an 8-port async adapter to work

Post by Chri » Sat, 09 Mar 2002 05:54:20

I am trying to install an 8 port adapter on a P43 140.  I can get it
configured and recognized in AIX, but I can't get a tty to come up.  I have
swapped cabling around and tried a second card and concentrator cable, so I
am pretty confident its not a hardware issue.

Running diag against the card from a running box produces the following:

A PROBLEM WAS DETECTED ON Thu Mar  7 15:40:10 EST 2002

The Service Request Number(s)/Probable Cause(s)
(causes are listed in descending order of probability):

830-908: 8-Port Async, EIA-232 (ISA) adapter test failed.
    Software         FRU: n/a                  n/a
                     Software Error
    sa2              FRU: n/a                  01-01
                     IBM 8-Port Async, EIA-232 (ISA)

Use Enter to continue.

running diag from the diagnostics disk produces no errors.

The box is running 4.3.3 freshly updated to ML9.  I'm now stumped.
Does anyone have a clue as to what my next step could be?

Thanks, Chris

Are you using a full handshaking null modem between the conncentrator
box and the terminal? Are your tty's enabled for login?

Remember the AIX device driver needs to see DSR (pin 6) and DCD (pin 8)
active before it will respond with a login message.

Well, I have the ttys enabled for login so that should be fine.  I am
assuming (I know, bad thing) that
the cable is proper.  I currently have a 7012-340 microchannel machine with
a 16 port concentrator.
I am unplugging from the old 16 port and putting into the new 8 port on an
enabled tty, but nothing
comes up on the terminal.  I have also put a 25 pin to 9 pin adapter on one
end and plugged into
a serial port on my "new" 140 and it works fine.

Do I have a cable problem, or something more drastic?
Chris

Do you have the same tty parameters set in both adapters, bps, parity,
number of stops bits, number of bits per character?

Since you have tried a different adapter and conncentrator it has to
be something simple. Is the new 8 port adapter an RS232 adapter the
same as your old 16 port? Hopefully the pin outs are the same for
both conncentrators. One never knows.

Make sure the ports are set for RS232 protocol and not RS422. I think
this adapter is port programmable.

I am tring to add tty ports to my ran system.  When I go to to smit

2)Add a TTY
3)tty rs232 Asynchronous Terminal
4)sa3 Available 04-05-22 16-Port RAN EIA-232 for 128-Port Adapter

I then get this error message
1800-109 There are currently no additional
SMIT screen entries available fo this
item  This item may require installation of
additional software before it can be accessed.

I have these files loaded
