File system space disappearing!

Post by hb » Fri, 05 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I am using AIX 4.1.4 on an E30 and the available space on one of its file
systems was disappearing.  When I would rm files to recover space it would
be eaten up within minutes.  Although the space according to df was going
away the sum of file sizes form du was not growing.  I was told that if a
process is writing to a file but has not closed it the du file size will not
change.  How do I find which process and which file is to blame for the
disappearing filesystem space?
Thanks,
Hill Brady

File system space disappearing!

I have had a similiar problem. I found the following commands useful.

fuser -dV /dev/<lv>
Shows files, within the filesystem, that have been dereferenced but
whose space has not be freed because a process has the file open. The
'-dV' options are undocumented on my AIX 4.2.1 machine. To get these
options I had to download a fix from IBM's support site. Can't remember
the APAR number but you should be able to find it.

lsof -s /dev/<lv>
This displays open files in file system. You may have to download this
from the Bull site http://www-frec.bull.com/

From both commands you get the PID and the Inode of the open file. Can
use 'ncheck -i' to get filename from the inode. The command 'ls -i'
could prove useful as well - lists the inodes.

Good Luck,
David Martin

PS. If its the /tmp file that is filling it maybe a shared library
caching problem. Run slibclean and see if makes any difference.

1. Can msdos file system handle double space DOS file system ?

Just wonder whether the msdos file system in Linux can handle double
space DOS system.  I have a double space DOS disk partition.  When I mount
the partition with msdos file system, I only see top level DOS files.
I would like to access the regular DOS files.  I have linux 1.3.2 kernel.
Can any new kernel handle that ?
