For system with a CD-ROM drive, you just insert the the CD-ROM in the
CD-ROM drive, halt the system (shutdown -F), turn the power off, turn
the system key to the service position, turn the power on and follow the
instruction from the menu. If you have something (except for a terminal)
on the serial port, take it off!! I found the migration installation
menus were straightforward.
We have 3 other machines without a CD_ROM or tape drive. I try to use
NIM to install 4.2 on them. I found the NIM installation instructions
were NOT straightforward. If anyone has successfully done
NIM installations please tell me what I am doing wrong here.
Here are my questions?
1) Why can I remove a NIM client?
# nim -o remove xxx
Error message: "the state of "xxx" prevent this operation from
succeeding"
The reason that I want to remove a client is because I can not change
the NIM network object that I defined with the wrong netmask.
nim -o change -a snm=255.255.255.0 network1
Error message: "network1 can not be changed .... remove client ......"
2) Is there a way to use NIM without IPL-ROM emulation disk?
I have made a IPL-ROM emulation diskette using
bosboot -r /usr/lpp/bos.sysmgt/nim/methods/IPLROM.emulation \
-d fd0 -M both
I tried to ping the NIM master with one of our computers without
success.
From the instruction page 4-5 from Network Installation Managment Guide
and Reference, one should be able select the network adapter from which
the machine will boot and the hardware address for the network adapter
will be displayed. I don't have those fields in my IPL-ROM menus.
Those are just a few things that one has put up with when one wants to
use
NIM.

Kiet.

smitty nim_mac
Perform Operations on Machines
reset = reset an object's NIM state
check via:
Change/Show Characteristics of a Machine
(nim has to rebuild tftp/bootp files)
on mca-machines just edit the NVRAM bootlistQuote:> The reason that I want to remove a client is because I can not change

multibus-machines (PowerPC) require a special treatment:
bootinfo -q tr0
Displays a 1 if the IPL code in the ROS on the machine running
the command is capable of booting via the specified adapter.
Otherwise, this command displays a 0.
shit happens, any filtering elements (bridge, gateway) betweenQuote:> I tried to ping the NIM master with one of our computers without

1. Need help! AIX 4.2 -> 4.3 upgrade
Dear experts,
I need to perform an upgrade from AIX 4.2 to 4.3. I have experience
administering 4.2 but I never performed an upgrade. Could you please
tell me if IBM has some documents describing the migration procedure.
We do not want to destroy the existing system and start from scratch,
we'd like to preserve the system layout and files and just upgrade the
OS.
Your advise is greatly appreciated!
