tty / modem problems

Post by Physician Support Service » Fri, 11 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hi, there!  I'm a bit new to this AIX thing so this may seem like a dumb
question, but I need help.

We use a medical application to transmit information to Medicare but we
constantly find that the modem on tty10 won't work.  The error message I
find says "Command is respawning too rapidly.  Check for possible errors."

I know the modem is ok, I switched it with one I know works.  So far the
only way that I can clear this problem is shutting down the system and
rebooting.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Joe

Hi,

From my experience this looks like you cabling is not
as proper connected as it should.

Hope this helps.

Respawning too rapidly errors on modems are most commonly the result of:
1) Cabling
2) Modem has local echo /result codes turned on and carrier detect forced high

pdisable tty## ; cu -dml tty## to your modem and configured it with AT&C1 and
turn off result codes and echo (ATQ1 and ATE0).  If your modem has ATQ2
setting - it is preferable.  A lot depends on the specific make and model of
modem.

Paul

1. AIX Modem tty problem

I got very interseting problem. Here is the case
- I have RS/6000 Model F-50 AIX 4.3 installed on.
- Serial 1 is connected to a ibm3151 ascii terminal
- Boca 33600 modem is connected to serial port 2
I configure this modem as a tty1 with default settings (auto answer on)

when i call the line from other modem, the modems gets connected but no data
goes in or out. As soon as you try to send a data from the client the line
gets disconnected.

The settings are all default, which i have done this job on other RS/6000
millions of times.

here is the tty config
  TTY type                               tty
  TTY interface                       rs232
  Description                           Asynchronous Terminal
  Parent adapter                     sa1
* PORT number                      [0]                      +
  Enable LOGIN                      share                   +
  BAUD rate                             [9600]                   +
  PARITY                                  [none]                   +
  BITS per character               [8]                      +
Number of STOP BITS         [1]                      +
TIME before advancing to next port setting         [0]
+#
  TERMINAL type                                      [dumb]
FLOW CONTROL to be used                            [xon]
+
OPEN DISCIPLINE to be used                         [dtropen]

This is a brand new F-50
Any idea will be wellcomed
