Sound playback capability for RS 6000/520 and 220?

Post by Marek Lugows » Sat, 19 Dec 1992 04:04:35

Forgive me if this is a Frequently Asked Question.

We need to play sound files on the RS 6000, presently 520, later 220 models.

1.  Is there IBM technology for this?
2.  Is there third-party technology for this?
3.  Hardware or software?  How much?

We need to play sound clips of about 50 seconds each, about 100 of them,
and call them from within Lucid Lisp 4.0/CLIM 1.1/CLX.  The actual sound
clips will originate from a Macintosh, so format conversion is an issue.

I am aware that this is no problem on the Sparcstation.  What about RS 6000?

Yes, something called a M-ACPA (M-Audio Capture and Playback Adaptor).
I'm not familiar with any high-level software support but it has driver
level support for Macintosh sound files as well as Sparc sound files
(8-bit mu-law, as I recall), and many other formats.

Yes the MACPA is the IBM solution and is a very cheap card with device
driver and sample program support in AIX 3.2.* (there were some recent
PTFs that added additional mixing functionality I believe). 16bit
stereo CD quality if I remember correctly.

I know there is an audio card available for the 6000.  There
is also a manual that addresses the characteristics of the
card and programming, e.g., mulaw, alaw, etc.

Card can handle stereo.  Need to get a copy of that manual -
writing device drivers (think that's the name).

1. Connecting NON IBM printers to RS/6000 to 520

I am having problems connecting a Printronix P6X40 to an IBM RS/6000
520 via a serial cable to a 64 port RS-232 board.  The printer is
configured to do XON/XOFF flow control and smit has the port configured
for xon on and DTR off.  Using 3003 update.

The problem is that the printer just stops printing and rebooting the computer
or the printer has no affect.  You can print to the printer for several
days then it just stops any by dinking with a breakout box the
printer starts printing again.  The problem looks to be intermittant since
I have tried all sorts of combinations of bringing the printer off-line,
powering off the printer, and anything else which might hang it.

Is anyone else running into these problems?  What tips/tricks
can I use for setting up third party serial printers?

Thanks in Advance
