Q: how to switch rootvg and altinst_rootvg w/NIM alt_disk_install

Greetings to you all !

I'm in the process of planning an AIX 4.1.5 to AIX 4.3.1 phaseover of 900
IBM RS/6000 workstations, of which about 700 are 43P systems with 2
internal 2.1GB disks.

I've experimented with the alt_disk_install process, and found this
concept to be exquisitely well adapted for my needs, except for one item.

The problem is that I would need a script to make *both* AIX 4.1.5 and
4.3.1 switch back and forth between rootvg and altinst_rootvg, and the
altinst_rootvg LVs names to be appropriately prefixed with the "/alt_".

This would enable keeping a filesystem containing user data locally on the
systems in the AIX 4.1.5 vg, being able to boot off AIX 4.3.1, while still
accessing that filesystem off the AIX 4.1.5 vg, while still maintaining a
capability to boot back off the AIX 4.1.5, in case of a fall-back
requirement.

Here's a graphical process of what I want to do :

   hdisk0          hdisk1           Description of tasks
   ======          ======           =========================
a) AIX415          no OS            This is the initial situation
   rootvg          no vg

b) AIX415          AIX431           This is after the alt_disk_install
   rootvg          altinst_rootvg   phases 1 and 2

c) AIX415          AIX431           After the alt_disk_install phase 3.
no vg           rootvg           lspv lists hdisk0 as "none"

d) AIX415          AIX431           HELP ! would be hybrid of importvg
   altinst_rootvg  rootvg           and alt_disk_install phase 3

e) AIX415          AIX431           missing, but alt_disk_install phase 3
rootvg          no vg            should be VERY close to being ok.

f) AIX415          AIX431           identical to step d), controlled LV
rootvg          altinst_rootvg   renaming and mount point changing

Anyone that can supply me with a *SOLID* procedure for steps d), e) and f)
will win my eternal admiration and gratitude.

That's NOT how it's designed.  Once you've finished the alternate disk
installation, you need to get rid of the altinst_rootvg definition (don't use
exportvg; there's a specific command in the documentation for this).

At this point, you only boot off one of the VGs; you can't access both at the
same time.  Accessing both simultaneously was NEVER the intention.

1. NIM question - Install 4.3.3 from a 5.1 NIM server

Hi All,

I have a NIM master currently running at 4.3.3. All of my nim clients
are currently at 4.3.3 also. Now, I have a need to install a 5.1
client, so I'm looking to upgrade my NIM master to 5.1 first in order
to be able to use NIM to install the 5.1 client.

My question is whether or not I will continue to be able to install
4.3.3 clients from the upgraded 5.1 NIM master? I'm going to get them
all to 5.1 eventually, but in the meantime, I need to be able to
install 4.3.3 via NIM as part of my disaster recovery plan.

Any thoughts? Should it work? Thanks in advance for any help or
direction.

Sincerely,
Don Whitlow
