Telnet won't work with dhcp or CIDR?

Post by Honda » Wed, 21 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I have RS/6000 7025-F50, running 4.2.1. Installed y2k updates, as well as a new
PC-to-Unix tool created by Syntax that allows our Unix machine to emulate a
bindery Netware server. Upon reboot, the prompt (via telnet) comes up only
after a minute or two of sitting at a blank screen or time out. FTP was timing
out. The interface netmask was set to 255.255.248.0, which is our normal
network netmask at least for netware. I changed it to 255.255.255.0 and then
the machines that have static addresses could get a login prompt right away.(
the xxx.xxx.79.xxx part) but those on dhcp cannot get in or it is slow for
them. The netware network is using CIDR and I had thought that AIX 4.2.1 does
not support CIDR. Is this true?  How would this have worked before? Anyways,
removed the y2k updates as well as the Syntax Tas server software but the
problem remains. Another server is performing the dhcp task for this server.
Clients on the netware network are not having problems with dhcp. Any help on
getting dhcp clients back up so I don't have to run around and give out 150
static IP addresses will be GREATLY appreciated.

Telnet won't work with dhcp or CIDR?

Perhaps DNS?  Do you have /etc/resolv.conf file after installing the y2k updates
that is different before or exists now but didn't before?  Any changes to
/etc/netsvc.conf?

Telnet won't work with dhcp or CIDR?

DNS is being performed by an NT server on the network. I have no netsvc.conf
file. The resolv.conf file shows our DNS server and domain name only.

I think the AIX box is trying to resolve the hostname of the connecting client.
You can do this either through DNS (if there's a DNS entry for these clients) or
through a hosts file.  You might want to create an /etc/netsvc.conf file to have
the AIX box first check its hosts file if you go this route.  Otherwise it will
resolve through a DNS server first.  I forget the format of the line in this
file but you can probably find out in the man pages.

Regarding, CIDR: OF COURSE AIX supports CIDR ... gheesh, why would you think
otherwise!

BTW, it's probably a good idea to have these clients resolve through DNS since
alot of utilities try to do a reverse lookup of the address to a name.  If you
have MS clients and servers, setup a WINS server, serve it through DHCP, and
include the WINS directive in the NT DNS servers' configurations.

1. DHCP, worked with 2.6 but won't work with Solaris 8!

I just upgraded an Ultra AXi based server from Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 8.
Almost everything went very well and the upgrade was well worth the effort
but for some I can't get DHCP to work!

I copied over my known working configuration files from 2.6 and when
I go to try to run the in.dhcpd program I get the following:

Nov 28 22:59:12 server in.dhcpd[22295]: Error binding to UDP receive socket: Address already in use
Nov 28 22:59:12 server in.dhcpd[22295]: Cannot configure any interfaces.

Netstat does show that port 67 is in use but I can't figure out what it
could be:

      *.67                                  Idle

I did check but there isn't a bootpd running.  I even tried rebooting
but I get the exact same error during the automatic starting of
in.dhcpd as well.
