Hardware error msg- not in diag info book

Post by Bill Voigh » Fri, 14 Aug 1998 04:00:00

AIX'ers,

I'm setting up a used J50 box.  Not having done an AIX box before, I am
RTFM'ing and not finding the following error that displays on the LED:

888-103-409-022

I've searched the Diag Info manual and found errors starting with 887
and 889, but no 888.  I've also found no twelve digit errors.

Since the 888 falls between sections on the MB and SCSI adapter, I
checked the how both are seated and they appear to be OK.

Add'l info:  only 102 and 162 show on LED before 888 msg comes up and
stays.  888 is flashing.

Any ideas?

Thanx,

BV

888 - System crash103 - BIST cannot determine model #

following type 103 or 105 errors are SRN #s  the numbers specify location
codes for FRUs
they can be found in the Common Diagnostics and Service Guide.

409 -

An 888 reflects a system crash.  A 103 error is most likely a hardware error.
The last 2 sets of numbers are your SRN, you should consult your diagnostic guide
to translate the SRN and also call your hardware service people.

The manual that refers to this is "Diagnostic Information for Microchannel Bus
Machines".  An online copy can be found at:

The 888 do show a system crash.  The 103 is hardware indicator.  A 102 would
indiacte a software problem.

The 409-022 code says:

"No response from none of the present CPUs."

Probable causes are:
        1. Bad CPU card(s)
        2. Bad System Planar

The book indicates that if you more than one CPU card installed (more than a
2-way SMP configuration), the sysplanar is a more likely culprit.

Hardware error msg- not in diag info book

The 888 means an abnormal halt occured. The next digit means
that the cause of the halt was hardware generated. The next digits
represent a SRN or Service Request Number.

Looking this up in the SRN section of the "Diagnostic Information for Micro
Channel Bus Systems"
manual, which can be found online with other docs at this starting URL:

    http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/resource

Gives this description:

Description: No response from any of the present CPUs.

Note: Location codes of missing or deconfigured modules are not displayed.
Action: Replace the faulty parts indicated by the FFC. If more than one CPU
module is present, it is recommended to begin the substitution with the
other
listed FFCs. If the symptom does not change, go to MAP 1540.

You can try reseating your CPU cards, otherwise you need to get your IBM
hardware service reps involved.

1. diag error msg help neede...

We have a risc 250 that has been upgraded to 4.3.2 with 160 mb ram, 9.1
gb on a wide scsi controller,  a tape drive ( seagate CTD4004E-S)
running on the internal scsi port of the server.

we have started getting failures in backups or in verifies ( using
microlite's backup edge software)

Were getting scsi0 errors   with   scsi_err10 errors followed by a tape
( rmt1 error)  now they are all the tape errors.

I ran diag several time the other night and for most of the runs got no
errors and finally on one of the runs got the following which I can find
no information on in the books or on the web:

973-415 A Reservation Conflict occurred
80% rmt1           tape
10% sysplaner   -----
10% ---------   software error

What is a reservation conflict?

The errlog ( under details)  is saying it is the adapter or the tape
unit...  Adapter being the built-in scsi port on the server? or the
board in the external tape drive?

I am not sure whether I need to get another mother board ( or start
shopping for a new box) or just need a new tape drive.........  Answers
or directions to places to look for more info would be appreciated...

thanks
steve lennon
