What is DOS SERVER? How does it relate to AADU?

IBM lists prod # 5765-024 as AIX ACCESS FOR DOS USERS V 2.1

I read through the announcement notes on this product and am still
confused about it. Does this product need to work concurrently with
DOS SERVER? Is AADU basiclly a terminal emulation package like
XTALK? The notes mention using virtual disks with AADU, and storing
DOS files on the AIX operating system, how is this done?

I know DOS SERVER comes with the AIX 3 base operating system, but
is separately installed. If DOS SERVER does not work concurrently
with AADU, what does it do?

I need any info that would help me understand what DOS SERVER and
AIX ACCESS FOR DOS USERS for AIX 3 is!!

Thanks in advance!

As you said, the DOS server is a server that runs on the AIX machine
and provides access to the AIX filesystems to connected PC.

Each such connected PC must have its very own copy of the "AIX ACCESS
FOR DOS USERS" program or never run at the same time. A protection
mechanism is built in to disable concurrent usage of copies of the same
program diskettes.

The DOS ACCESS provides a vt100 emulator that can be used to log in the
AIX system as a regular vt100 terminal user but it also provides the
user with the possibility of seeing the AIX filesystems as DOS drives
with filename conversions ala "PC NFS" (remember, AIX filenames can be
longer and contain characters that are not possible on the PC). These
files can be accessed by DOS as any normal DOS files except the
END_OF_LINE format problem (CRLF <-> LF).

DOS ACCESS and DOS SERVER can connect either thru serial lines or
Ethernet connection (Serial line looks like an NFS at 9600 bds but
is workable). I personally tried the serial connection and mainly used
it as a file transfer utility (copy A:xxxxxx.yyy e:) which is a lot
easier than any other way, isn't it ?

As far as I can remember, there are some remote printing and remote
processing possible (but I might be mixing with DOS MERGE).

BTW: the same things exist for AIX on PS2.

AADU has two functions.  It can be a terminal emulation package with file
transfer, etc.  The other program, login, accesses the disk drive on the
AIX system to where it looks like an additional drive to the DOS System.
The DOS Server programs act as the control program on the AIX system
allowing multiple DOS sessions.

Hope this helps,

If you are looking for DOS access to files stored on an RS/6K, check out
portable netware for AIX 3, which provides similar functions, but a lot
more management and security features. It also interfaces with any
existing netware LANs you might have running. I'm not sure when it/if it
is available, but with IBM and Netware becoming buddies I don't think
you will have long to wait.

If you only want NFS mounted filesystems, look at PC-NFS from FTP
Software. I have been able to mount filesystems to a MAC, so I
suppose a generic DOS machine shouldn't be too much trouble :-}

1. AADU DOS server error message

We've got a system with AIX 4.1 on it, and we keep getting mail
to root with errors about the AADU DOS server, to wit:

AADU DOS server. Fatal error in ./pciconsvi.ip 17800
Unable to find data about host "localhost".

Also errors in ./pcimapsvr.ip (same thing).
What's going on? How can we make these errors go away?
And what is the AADU DOS server?

a chance to see this newsgroup frequently.  Thanks to all.
