Adding a disk to a SSA RAID Array

Adding a disk to a SSA RAID Array

Post by Jeroen Sanger » Wed, 19 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hi there,

I am trying to add an extra disk to an SSA RAID array.

I have made the disk an Array Candidate Disk using smit, but when I tell
smit to add a disk to an SSA RAID Array, I receive the message "1800-051
There are no items of this type".

Als in the man pages of ssaraid I can't figure out how to add a disk to an
SSA RAID array.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong, and how I can add this disk to the
RAID Array???

Kind regards,

Jeroen Sangers

Sorry, but unless the array is 'troubled,' you
have to back up the data, delete the array, and
recreate the array with the new drive, then
restore the data.

You can't.   You have to backup, destroy the raid volume,
recreate the raid volume with the extra disk, restore.

Adding a disk to a SSA RAID Array

Rough instructions:
smit
    Devices
        SSA RAID Arrays
Change/Show Use of an SSA Physical Disk
Select the SSA adapter and the new disk
Change Current Use to (?) Array Candidate
                <return> to execute
<cancel> to get back to SSA RAID Arrays
        SSA RAID Arrays
Change Member Disks in an SSA RAID Array
Add a Disk to an SSA RAID Array
Pick the array and disk (I am a little vague here,
since I can't do it without a spare disk to add)

Note that you have to go through this procedure when you are replacing a
dead SSA drive as well.

Good luck.

This is exactly what I've tried. After selecting the option Add a Disk to an
SSA RAID Array I receive the message that there's no such device available.
I've understood that this option only works for a degraded array e.g. an
array with one disk missing, but it doesn't work on a working array. Reason
is that the LVM is not able to expand a hdisk.

1. Re-using SSA disks previously members of a SSA RAID array

On Tue, 16 Mar 1999 20:12:12 -0500 a carbon-based biped by the name of Lekic

Somewhere under the SSA Raid menu entry in the smit|Devices menu,
there is a point that will let you change the usage of a SSA disk.
If a disk has been a member of an array, it is probably listed as
'Array candidate disk' or 'Hot Spare'.
Change that to 'AIX system disk' for all the disks, and you should
be able to re-use the units as normal SSA disks.

Peter
