Need help! AIX 4.2 -> 4.3 upgrade

Post by No Way » Thu, 07 Mar 2002 05:37:48

Dear experts,

I need to perform an upgrade from AIX 4.2 to 4.3. I have experience
administering 4.2 but I never performed an upgrade. Could you please
tell me if IBM has some documents describing the migration procedure.
We do not want to destroy the existing system and start from scratch,
we'd like to preserve the system layout and files and just upgrade the
OS.

Your advise is greatly appreciated!

        It's been a while but (as I recall) you can just do it with SMIT.  It
should be no big deal to retain your settings.

Thank you, Jamie!

This site is a great source of information but Installation Guide
talks about how to install a fresh OS, I didn't find anything on how
to upgrade. It does have a section "Appendix D. Migrating from AIX
Version 3.2, AIX Version 4.1, or AIX Version 4.2" but it doesn't help
much.

It's in the manual, but here it goes:

1. Back up your system.
2. Install BOS from CD-ROM (or tape)
   Select "Migration Installation", which in any
   case is the default when you're booting from
   the install media on a system that has an earlier
   version of AIX installed.
3. Wait for the system to install all the packages
   from CD-ROM (or tape)

I suggest you read pages 3-20 of the AIX 4.3 Installation
guide several times. The order in which things are presented
isn't great, but if you concentrate on "Migration installation"
all will become clear after a few reads.

Take care,

Its no big deal.... just stick in the 4.3.3 cd disk 1 and use smit to
'update_all'.  You need to bounce the server afterwards of course.

You have to perform a migration install, not an update_all.

-----------
To do an Upgrade, you should Not select NEW And Complete Install. If
you select this this will overwrite everything what is existing.

Start the System in the Maintainance Mode, And Install the CD, and
Allow it to Boot through the CD, And then follow thew Install
Instructions.

There select MIGRATION as the Install Type. And also u can decide to
install on Diff hard disk. Default is Hdisk0, U can change to install
on Hdisk1, or any other. In that case it wont delete the remaining
Hard Disks.

I hope this should solve your Problem

Doing this over a 4.2.1 will yeld a messed up ODM.

I knew I shouldn't doit, but I was going to reinstall
it, so I decided to learn something.

Thank you all, guys! You have been a great help. Unfortunately, the
client decided to postpone the migration indefinitely...

You definately want to do a migration install.

Beaware that some (few) have a problem, review past posts there are
some clues (I never found anything concrete)  but when I tried to
migrate an R40 the migration would appear to go great all the filesets
would get upgraded. And the reboot would crash at about the time the
hand off the the HD should take place.

IBM couldn't give me an answer to the issue but they did take my 4.2.1
mksysb and install it on one if their boxes.  They were able to do the
migration in Austin and sent me a 4.3.3 mksysb which I then used to
CLONE my R40.  This was the only way I could ever get my R40 from
4.2.1 -> 4.3.3

I hope this doesn't happen to you, but I thought I would share the
experience.

1. pthreads AIX 4.2 --> AIX 4.3

Hi there,

I have a problem using pthreads.
I've compiled my program under AIX 4.2 and i used
the call pthread_init(). This worked great. But
now i've upgraded to AIX 4.3 and the function
pthread_init() doesn't exist anymore.
Now my program is coring.

I know that the call to pthread_init() under AIX
4.2 was because of a bug and pthreads don't work
without it. Does anybody knows the solution or
any other comment?

Thanx...
