AIX 3.1 sendmail, named, and 2 net interfaces

Post by R. Lindsay To » Thu, 29 Nov 1990 02:43:34

I am trying to set up my sendmail.cf to work on an RS6000 that has
two ethernet interfaces and runs named.  The machine has, of course,
different IP addresses for each interface, but a single name; it also
runs routed to function as a gateway between the two subnets.  It also
runs named, and uses name resolution.  These all work correctly; sending
mail works correctly; but receiving mail does not work.  I get the following
sort of messages from the MAILER-DAEMON:

=========================================================

   ----- Transcript of session follows -----

Quote:>>> HELO aix01.ecs.rpi.edu

<<< 553 Local configuration error, hostname not recognized as local

   ----- Unsent message follows -----

=========================================================

Note that aix01.ecs.rpi.edu is what hostname returns on this machine.  I'm
using IBM's sendmail.cf, with modifications made as appropriate for host and
domain name.  (I've gotten this to work with no problem on an RS6000 with
only a single network interface).

Can anyone enlighten me on anything I may be doing wrong?

1. RS/6000 sendmail HELO problem (AIX 3.1)

I have a problem with the RS/6000 sendmail.  I've configured it
properly so it realizes who it is and who the UUCP relay is, but
it passes the wrong machine name in the HELO message sent to the
remote SMTP.

The conversation goes a lot like this:

[RS/6000 talking to sendmail on ISC 2.2]
<<< 553 Local configuration error, hostname not recognized as local

Another box, an NCR Tower, gives the same 553 message noting that
it refuses to talk to itself.

Internal mail on the RS/6000 works fine, and I can mail from the
ISC box into the 6000, but I can't get outbound mail to work.

Any help you can provide (like a copy of sendmail 5.61 or greater
that's non-IBM that will work on the box :-)) will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
