Newbie Questions

Post by Sea » Thu, 14 Sep 2000 07:03:05

I am a senior at the University of Florida, and am taking a UNIX Systems
Admin course, and IBM donated 15 RS/6000 B50s for our use.  The point of
the course is to learn UNIX systems administration, and one of two
operating systems that we will be using is AIX (the other is Yellow Dog
Linux).

I have some questions that I'm sure someone can answer for me:

1.  Is there a portsniffer for AIX?  One of the points of the class is
to build a secure server (web, ftp, shell, etc)., and being able to
crack into classmates machines will be one of our challenges.

2.  Where are the man pages in AIX?  I did a man man, and nothing
happened.  Do these even come preinstalled, or what?

3.  Where can I get the latest versions of OpenSSH, SecureFTP, etc.?  I
want to be rid of telnet login and be strictly ssh?

4.  The shells that come with AIX are horrible.  Where can I get bash
for AIX?

If anyone can answer these questions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
--- Sean

In our system, they did not.  They were available on the Documentation
CD delivered with our system.  Look for fileset names like:

 bos.html.en_US.cmds.cmds1

Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/aix/download/
Then go to the UCLA download site mentioned there.

Yes, man iptrace

Oh, don't bother trying man iptrace above then.  They're on a separate
installation CD, called "Base Documentation", or on the web at
http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/doc_link/en_US/a_doc_lib/aixgen/

www-frec.bull.com, or compile from source.  You should compile from
source.

See above, but: As a learning experience, I'd recommend that you don't change
the shell that comes with the OS.  AIX uses ksh, which is just as, if not
more functional that bash.  Also, you may find yourself working for a company
in a few years where you are not allowed to install bash.  You'd be better
off learning how to work around the limitations of what is included with
the operating system.

1. Newbie (I mean REAL NEWBIE) question

Sorry, I'm not a pc idiot, just completely new to linux. I lurked here
for a day or two and didn't see the answer.

Can I run Windows95 in a Linux RedHat 5.2 shell? This would let me play
Linux but still use my favorite apps. I've set it up to dual boot, but I
want to actually run one or two Win95 sessions in Linux itself.

Someone told me it was possible, but in the 4 days of having RedHat on
my system I can't figure it out...

Sorry for the dumb question.
