vt100 to 3270 keymap?

Post by Dave Beed » Sat, 16 May 1992 01:21:24

Heres my problem...we have the need to telnet into various sites which
support 3270 emulation from our rs6000.  Telneting works fine, however, folks
sign on to our rs6k using vt100 emulation.  From the rs6k they run telnet to,
lets say, or VM machine supporting 3270 emulation.  Now the keyboard is
goofy...the up keys don't go up etc.  You can still function if you happen to
know that ctrl-n, ctrl-p and some others move your cursor around...most don't
know this and besides...it's a pain.  So...how do I (or can I) set up a key
map on the rs6k to translate the vt100 key codes to the 3270 equivalents?

vt100 to 3270 keymap?

You can customize the keymap via a file.  Look at the back of the
documentation for 'telnet' and you'll see pointers to files named
things like /etc/3270.keys and $HOME/.3270keys.  The documentation
for the files and the samples on the system give some idea of
how it works.  I've never found a complete description anywhere
and would love to know if one exists.

I use Kermit from home and found that it's terminal emulation
was actually fairly happy with many of the definitions for an 'hft'.
It would be some work to get it really right for a vt100 and I've
not done it.  I would love to see that too.

1. 3270 emulation on a VT100/220 screen

I have a small problem with the emulation packages at work, not sure
if this is the right group but here goes.

We use the sunlink package on our SUN to emulate a cluster controller
type pu2 connecting to an MVS host. 3270 screen emulation requires 24 lines
for the application plus 1 status line (25 total). I am told that vt100/220
emualtion is 24 lines on our pc's (PCNFS). Our freedom terminals will display
25 lines but as most people only want 1 screen(ie. PC) on their desk this
will not do.

Can we get a product for the PC that will emulate vt100 in 25lines?? Or
is it just bad luck? (ie. is there some sharewhare etc.)

Thanks,
Rob.
