ttys and serial printer rs-422 with AIX 4.3.1

ttys and serial printer rs-422 with AIX 4.3.1

Post by Andreas Pamming » Sat, 05 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

I have encountered two problems with my rs-422 devices after upgrading
from AIX 3.2.5 to 4.3.1:

Some of my terminals don't work anymore after a reboot. There is no
getty running although ttys are defined in inittab. If I remove ttys
and define them again they work, even after rebooting the system - but
if I reboot again some ttys disappear (no getty running). I already
tried installing devices.mca.edd0.4.3.1.2, with no effect. Any ideas?

I also have a serial printer connected via rs-422. After working for a
while the queue suddenly goes to dev_wait and I am not able to restart
the queue or cancel print jobs. stopsrc -s qdaemon doesn't work
either, i have to kill -9 qdaemon, then I am able to cancel print jobs
and the queue is ok again. Any thoughts?

Any help will be highly appreciated,

Thanks

Andy

Does the "before" inittab show /etc/getty and after removing and readding
the tty
show "/usr/sbin/getty" ?  Is /etc/getty linked to /usr/sbin/getty (link is
created by
installing the bos.compat filesets)

Regards,
Paul

I think AIX developers have ignored RS-422 hoping it will go away,
especially for printers.
Check your printer pacing. Make sure it is set to Xon/Xoff. Of course
that is the only way for RS-422 to control pacing but when migrating
from 3.2 to 4.x pacing sometimes gets set to DTR.

When you define devices connected to RS-422 check all parameters in SMIT
to insure that they are valid for RS-422.
