I can't install AIX 4.3 on IBM RS6000 machine 220, WHY?

watch my configuration:
               IBM workstation 220
               64 Mb
               Hdrive 1Gb
               External CDROM SCSI Plextor

the system begins on service position with AIX 4.3.1 inserted
into CDROM drive; the machine goes to cdrom drive and read some
informations. few minutes later the system stay in C31 code with
a blank screen. Why?

C31 is the point at which the system console is identified.  Usually, you
can press 1 and ENTER on the device to be used during installation as the
system console.  If you truely have a blank console, check your cabling.

It is waiting for you to select your console. You need to hook up a
serial terminal at 9600 baud to serial 1. Then when c31 comes up it
will ask you to type in a "1" to use the term for the install. What you
see is nothing because nothing is hooked up to it.

Cabling is pretty important. It has to be null modem and not just
the 2-3-7 thing. C31 is a good thing. If "1" and enter don't spit
anything up, it's gotta be a cable issue.

1. Re. Problems adding tape drives to RS6000/220 Re: Problems adding tape drives to RS6000/220

Your system does not find the tape during boot phase. For IBM tapes normally
plug them, switch them on, boot up the system and AIX automatically
configures them.

The 220 uses other SCSI cabels than your 320 are they ok. Check the SCSI ID
of your tape - maybe you have other devices using the same ID. Run
'lscfg -v' to display all devices.
