10/100 Ethernet MCA - Setting Speed/Duplex ?

Post by David Schuman » Tue, 19 Sep 2000 04:00:00

I have an Ethernet Adapter that I believe is having trouble negotiating
speed/duplex mode with the LAN switch. I would like to set the adapter for a
fixed speed and duplex mode to see if that helps. Any help with the
procedure would be appreciated.

10/100 Ethernet Adapter (MCA, Part # 2994)
AIX 4.3.3
RS/6000 7030-3CT

Thank you.

We had the same problem - had to force the ethernet card and the switch
port to 100 Full instead of auto.  To set the card:

- smitty tcpip/further config/network interfaces/selection/change: set
interface to detach
- smitty devices/communications/Ethernet/adapter/change: set speed and full
- smitty tcpip/further config/network interfaces/selection/change: set
interface to up
- re-establist static routs removed by detach.

I had exactly the same problem but found that it related to both ends
being set to auto.

If the router is set on auto discovery then you need to be explicit.

Generally, I avoid auto settings on my servers like the plague because
it causes nothing but problems.

Thanks. This solved the problem.

Try smit. (I did the same thing last week).
smit - devices -

10/100 Ethernet MCA - Setting Speed/Duplex ?

Hi DAvid,

use smitty, devices
then choose your ethernet adapter, change characteristics
set media speed to the desired value and choose the last option "apply
to database only"

then reboot and then the speed should be changed.
verify settings with netstat -v .

regards
Hartwig

1. 10/100 MCA Ethernet Card --> Force to half-duplex?

We have installed a few 10/100 MCA Ethernet cards which become configured as
100Mb full-duplex when they come up.  Our software vendor keeps telling us
that when we replace the balance of them on our hosts (retiring dual FDDI
rings) that our system will be unstable unless we force the cards to
half-duplex.

Search as I might, I cannot find a smit, or other command that will allow
the modification of an attribute to accomplish this.  What have I missed?

If all else fails, I can force half-duplex at the network switch by
configuring the port as half duplex, but this brings along with it a few
logistical issues (keeping that host on that "specially configured" port,
....
