F30 hangs at "Multi-user Initialization Complete"

Post by Steven Pals » Fri, 10 Jan 2003 07:03:42

Have a 7025-F30 running AIX 4.3.2 that just will not boot all the way
up.  The server will hang at "Multi-user Initialization Complete" and
never come to a log in.  I have tried several cabling schemes per
other posts in the newgroups to no avail.  Have tried coming up with a
minimal inittab file which makes no differnce.  We can boot the system
into single user mode where we were able to add the clocal entry to
the tty0 attributes which made no difference.  We have tried different
terminals.  The only way we can get the system to come all the way up
into multiuser mode is to do a reinstall from a mksysb tape and let
the system do the auto reboot following the install.  However when the
system is subsequently shutdown then the system will not go past
"Multi-user Initialization Complete"

I realize this subject appears to heve been beat to death in other
posts but the remedies prescribed there just don't work in this
particular machine.

I have had this problem in the past.  For me, it was a matter of tcpip
being messed up.  Bring up in maintenance mode, make sure tcpip is
properly configured.

Also, how long have you waited at that stage?  Could it be a matter of
patience?  See what error messages you can get if you wait a couple
hours (if you have the time).

Any LEDs associated?  You have tried minimal inittab (can't be tcpip
then) and it still does not come up? have you run diags? shounds like
h/w to me or a driver issue...

Can you test with 433 or 51 to rule out the drivers?

F30 hangs at "Multi-user Initialization Complete"

As i can recall, this is a problem in /etc/inittab. Try to remove
the file and replace it with a backup copy from tape. Sometimes
if you look in it, you won't see faults or errors but there is a unreadable
or undisplayable character which causes the hang.

Boot in single user mode and restore the file.
Also make sure you have no HW failure with multiport adapter cards
like the 8-port or 16-port RAN. Check the external cables. Remove
and re-connect them. Shutdown the system first, check cables
and boot again.

Good luck.

1. eth0 and eth1 "Delaying eth0 Initialization" and "Delaying eth1 Initialization" errors

Hello, I am a linux newbie, and have run into a problem.

I am using RH 7.1 with kernel 2.4.2.  I built a new kernel (to be used for
firewall purposes).  The kernel built fine and it booted successfully except
that with both eth0 and eth1, the errors "Delaying eth0 Initialization" and
"Delaying eth0 Initialization" come up.  I did not have this problem with
the original kernel.

Both NICs are Linksys LNE100TXs using the 169 chip.  The ipcfg-eth0 and 1
are set to activate on boot.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Alan
