AIX 4.3 or AIX 5L V5.1 ?

Post by Ulrich-W. Kaestn » Thu, 16 May 2002 23:13:55

Hello,

I use an IBM RS/6000 7043-140 workstation with AIX 4.1.
I have to pay the same price if I update to AIX 4.3 or AIX 5L V5.1.

a) Can you imagine a reason why not to update to AIX 5L V5.1 and use
the older AIX 4.3 ?
b) If I sell the system (including the AIX licence), which operating
system supposably will get a higher price ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good time,
Ulrich

No.  New function will continue to be added to 5.1.  4.3 will just
coast along now.

A more current one, I would imagine.

Yes. We're running 5.1 on a 7043-140. Works great. The yes is only if you
have a specific application which specifically states it will not run on
5.1. We don't have any. HACMP used to be an issue, but HA 4.4.1 supports 5.1
now.

How 'bout the Ultimedia Services? Last time I checked, they weren't avai-
lable for 5L.
As long as the UMS aren't ported to 5L, I'll stay with 4.3.3.

Good point. I have a grave feeling they're not going to do it either,
because I understand from other posts that it works just fine in 5L. And I
finally got RealPlayer working with it right before going to 5L too.

What about with old hardware? Mine is an RS6K 7011 Model 250 with 64MB
of RAM... I'm hesitant to upgrade to a newer OS version because I
already have a bit of a resource squeeze on.

Thanks,

Steve

We're getting god results with 5.1 on a 7011-250 with 64MB ram, however,
32mb didn't work at all. Of course, "resource squeeze" may imply it's not
enough. We're using one as an imap/pop mail server and it does pretty good.
