AIX Training Materials

Post by Aaron Robert » Tue, 22 Sep 1998 04:00:00

In the next few months, I will be purchasing several AIX servers for my
company.  It will be my first time returning to a UNIX platform in 10
years.  Needless to say, I'm a bit rusty!

Are there any good books or other training materials that someone could
recommend?

Thanks,
Aaron Roberts

I also am looking for material - specifically in the area of passing the
certifications.

Aaron, If you are needing general knowledge, IBM has some good redbooks.
The classes are ok, but not worth the price they want to charge.

I found a good book by DeRoest (orange and blue) titled:
AIX RS/6000 system and Administration Guide
ISBN 0-07-036439-7

It's a good well rounded book that doesn't start off too basic nor go too
far into the programming code.

DeRoest has a 2nd Ed of this book - Aix Version 4 : System and Administration
Guide (ISBN 0070366888).

i also find these good:
Aix Performance Tuning - Frank Waters
Aix/6000 System Guide - Frank Cervone

also if you want to get into the internal:
Aix/6000Internals and Architecture - David Kelly

and yes!  they do have a full library of the Redbooks in the RS/6000 Readbook
CD set.

Orphy! :-)

Depending How basic you need .
I found that O'Reilly & Associates - book -
Unix in a NutShell is a great little reference bible, explains thing well ,
etc.   When I bought it is was $9.00 - just my budget!!

1. AIX Training Materials

If it's really been years since doing AIX, I'd suggest taking some
classes.  Also, get "The AIX Survival Guide" by Andreas Siegert
If commands are really rusty - you may want to go to a "Using AIX"
class.  Check the ibm web site and look at the description for Q1213
and see if those 4.5 days will be useful to you.

Definetly look at the description for Q1114 and perhaps later Q1116.
I'm not saying you have to take IBM courses.  Just look at the topic
description and see what is covered.  I'm sure there are other
vendors teaching AIX courses - but at least you have a base for
comparison.

Should you decide on IBM courses - you might want to check into an
"Education Card" which is unlimited education for one year.  It pays
back after 13 days of education.  Again, other education companys have
similar plans.
