Multiboot Setup with two hard drives

Multiboot Setup with two hard drives

Post by Joe Moo » Thu, 09 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I have a 43P-150 with two hard disks.  I would like to be able to switch
between AIX 4.3.2 installed on hdisk0 and AIX 4.2.1 installed on hdisk1.

Currently, I can do this by changing the bootlist, but the SMS utility
has an option os "Multiboot Setup", which sounds like what I want.

With the Multiboot enabled, SMS displays a menu where I can choose an
operating system, but only the operating system that is installed on the
first hard disk in the bootlist is available.  So, even if both hdisks
are in the bootlist, only the OS on the first one (in order) is listed.

Does anyone know the magic incantation I have to run to get this working?

I would guess it's somewhere in bosboot or somewhere.

Thanks in Advance.

IBM's vision is apparently to make IBM hardware "scream with Microsoft

I have visions of screaming with (at and about) Microsoft software, too.

If I recall correctly, this option works like an (IBM-compatible) PC,
where the boot disk is partitioned for multiple operating systems (e.g.
DOS, Windows, NT, Linux - maximum of 4) and you can boot from one or the
other.

Some of the earlier RSPC (and maybe CHRP ?) can run Windows NT, and so
you could use the SMS to enable mutliboot of either AIX or NT if they
were on the same disk.

As far as I know there's no way to partition an AIX boot disk to allow
two versions of AIX to coexist on the same disk.

Sorry, looks like your wand ran out of orange smoke.

AIX 4.3 has an alternative rootvg feature, but this only supports 4.3
rootvg's not a mixture.

Looks like you've got the best way to do it already - alter the
bootlist.

Yup.  Bootlist is the way to go.  But you don't HAVE to goto the
SMS Mulitboot setup to switch it.  If you are already UP, you can
easily run the command 'bootlist -m normal hdiskX' and reboot.

This isn't as easy as choosing an OS like LILO or other boot manager,
but it does avoid the SMS finger dance.  :)
