10/100 BaseT Ethernet cards in 550 ?

Post by Dave Fel » Sat, 22 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Has anyone managed to get the 10/100BaseT Ethernet cards to work in
their microchannel 550 with any version of AIX from 3.2.5 to 4.3?  The
only thing IBM seems to be able to tell me is that it should work but is
unsupported in the 550. (They didn't test it). At $795 a pop, that's not
comfortable!  Thx !

Make sure you specify the speed of the card when configuring. They do
not seem to be able to do auto-negotiate. Also make sure you have the
latest device driver - in 4.2.1 it is at the .11 level. We had a very
difficult time with one on a C10. It turned out to be a defect adapter
card - lots of CRC errors on read.

Use SMIT devices. If you have already configured TCP/IP you will need to
bring the network interfaces down, (ifconfig en0 down, ifconfig et0 down)
delete the interfaces, (rmdev -l en0, rmdev -l et0), reconfigure devices,
(cfgmgr), reconfigure your ethernet adapter, ent0 (SMIT devices), select
the speed for the device, and finally reconfigure TCP/IP with SMIT.
(SMIT tcpip, Minimum Configuration and Startup)

1. 10/100 Ethernet SWITCH (to be used for Fast Ethernet LAN, and 10-BaseT cable modem)

You can get a two-port switch from Netgear or Linksys for under $100US, that
will work fine.  You'll need a 100baseTX hub on the fast side and a 10baseT
hub on the slow side, as well.

10/100 ISA cards do exist, but quite frankly unless you find them used or at
auction, it will probably be cheaper to put in a PCI motherboard.

Don't really know what's fastest and most stable for Linux--Intel works well
for Novell and NT.
