How to force the speed of a 10/100/1000 ethernet card to 1000

How to force the speed of a 10/100/1000 ethernet card to 1000

Post by philipp » Thu, 17 Apr 2003 22:29:11

I've got a pSeries with a 10/100/1000 ethernet card, and the attribute
"media_speed" is on Auto_Negotiation".
When I run "lsattr -R -l ent0 -a media_speed", the result is :
10_Half_Duplex
10_Full_Duplex
100_Half_Duplex
100_Full_Duplex
Auto_Negotiation
Then I can't force the card to 1000 or 1000_Full_Duplex or somethng else...
If I run "chdev -P -l ent0 -a media_speed=1000_Full_Duplex", I've got an
error...

Somebody has a solution ?

Thanks a lot

From IBM announcement letter:

5700 /5701 Limitations

Half Duplex (HDX) mode is not supported at the 1000 Mbps speed on either
adapter

From "Kernel Extensions and Device Support Programming Concepts"

Media Speed
The media speed attribute indicates the speed at which the adapter will attempt
to operate. The available speeds are 10 Mbps half-duplex, 10 Mbps full-duplex,
100 Mbps half-duplex, 100 Mbps full-duplex and auto-negotiation, with a default
of auto-negotiation. Select auto-negotiate when the adapter should use
auto-negotiation across the network to determine the speed. When the network
will not support auto-negotiation, select the specific speed.
Note
1000 MBps half and full duplex are not valid values. As per the IEEE 802.3z
specification, gigabit speeds of any duplexity must be auto-negotiated for
copper (TX) based adapters. Please select auto-negotiation if these speeds are
desired.

I hope that's help you

Actually u can not set it to 1000 fulldpx. You need to put auto-neg.

Please enable jumbo frames i.e mtu to 9000 and chdev cmd with rmmtu to 9000.

Check the difference.Set no -o rfc 1323=1

1. Can FC 2975 (10/100/1000) Ethernet card work with S7A?

we plan to buy a FC 2975 Ethernet card (10/100/1000) and put on S7A computer AIX
4.3.3).
I checked with IBM engineers one told it will work without problem.  Another one
told me I can put FC2975 on S7A, but IBM does NOT support it.  Does anyone has
experience on FC2975 with S7A.
