2nd IP Address on the same NIC possible?

2nd IP Address on the same NIC possible?

Post by PN » Tue, 18 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I would like to add a second IP Address to the same NIC on my RISC H70 AIX
4.3.3. Is it possible, and how to do it? If it's not, will a second NIC do
the job?
Thanks

# ifconfig <interface> alias <ip_address> netmask <subnet> up
EX:
# ifconfig en0 alias 192.168.110.232 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

To remove the alias:
# ifconfig <interface> delete <ip_address>
EX:
# ifconfig en0 delete 192.168.110.232

If you want the interface up after a reboot, you need to add it to the
/etc/rc.net.

All true, but given that PN said 4.3.3, he can use the alias4
attributes of en0, tr0, etc. in ODM to have the system add the
aliases.  In other words, PN might want to run

                           smitty mkinet4al

and add the alias that way, rather than modifying /etc/rc.net.  This
should work on 4.3.0 and up.

Matthew,
I tried to add the line to /etc/rc.net and the system crashed! I had to copy
the good rc.net back to /etc
What is the proper way to  put it into rc.net ?
Thanks

Look for the section labled "# Part II - Traditional Configuration.".  There
are some examples in there.  Also man rc.net.

I do not use the alias in my rc.net so I don't have a direct example.
