Plea for help in NYC area - need cleaning tape for 8MM tape drive

Post by Katherine Smit » Sun, 12 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Hi - I think I know why my mksysb failed -- tape drive needs cleaning --
this is a new box that I was trying to set up for some final Y2k testing.
I need to have a system backup before I proceed but the IBM tape I have
for backup is rejected because the drive indicates it must be cleaned.
I don't have a cleaning tape for this box -- I tried to use the one I have
for my 59H but it did not like it -- said it was illegal tape - nice,
right?

I know this sounds crazy but if anyone in the NYC area happens to
be working on Sunday (I'm giving up for tonight), and . . . has a cleaning
tape for a H70 7026 - can I borrow, buy?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Kathy

The new H70s come with the  20/40GB 8mm AME type tape drive.  They can read
from a standard 8mm tape, but they require AME cartridges to write!  Our new
H70 had the same problem just the other day.  We put a regular 8mm tape in
to run a mksysb, got the same error, and then got tape errors after that.
The good news is the H70 comes with a cleaning cartride, and an AME
cartridge.  After we cleaned the tape drive with the IBM provided cleaning
cartridge, and then switched to the IBM provided AME cartridge we were ok.

Look around your server.  The solution is probably right there.

Good luck!
