slow login after password entry

Post by mandrak » Fri, 14 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I have an S70 running 4.3.0.0 with some problems which developed since
1/1/2000.
I applied all the recommended IBM patches for Y2K last year.

The problem
After entry of the username and password, there is a 30 second delay before
the
prompt appears. The delay is present when logging in from the console as
well as
remotely from PCs using telnet or from other AIX systems locally. It also
occurs when
running commands like rsh and rexec.

This is impacting on people who connect to the system using remote SAS
sessions
as the delay corresponds to the time they time out.

Additionally, I have a problem with changing passwords and get the error

3004-709 Error changing password for <user>

The IBM documentation is not helpful in regard to this error.

To try and fix the password problem I have run grpck, usrck and pwdck.

Any help would be useful. I have seen this and related problems come up
time and time again on this newsgroup but no-one seems to have given a
definitive fix for the problem.

I would rather not reboot the system and I believe AIX should be able to
recover
gracefully from this sort of fault.

Hi mandrake,
I think your problem is name resolution.
Check out that your DNS server is visible from your host.

AIX offers several services for resolving host names and aliases. The
gethostbyname, gethostbyaddr, and gethostent subroutines use the
services
for resolving names. A default is set to determine the order in which
these
services are tried for resolving host names and Internet Protocol (IP)
addresses.
The default order for resolving host names is:
1. BIND/DNS (named)
2. Network Information Service (NIS)
3. Local /etc/hosts file
This default order can be overwritten by creating the configuration
file,
/etc/netsvc.conf, and specifying the desired ordering (for example
local,bind).
Put your hostnames and ip-address  in /etc/hosts.
After that you can work without nameserver.

To all the people who ask for slow telnet or ftp login:

Many times, this problem is caused by DNS misconfiguration.

The best way to avoid this:

1. Edit the file /etc/hosts and include in it all the machines that will
log in your AIX server:
For example:   192.168.1.1     webmaster
2. Edit or create the file /etc/netsvc.conf
3. Include the line:    hosts=local,bind

With this, local name resolving is made before than DNS.

B.Bernal

<sigh>. My seemingly monthly rant on this subject follows. <smile>

If you don't want the resolver to ask everyone on the list in
netsvc.conf, you'll have to either count on one of them answering back
claiming to be authoratitive( DNS, NIS, and NIS+ can be configured to
do so) , or you have to instruct your local machine that /etc/host
entries are in fact authoratitive ... because they _aren't_ by default.

The magic word = "hosts=local=auth,bind"

note the "=auth" syntax.

See "AIX Version 4.3 System Management Guide: Communications and
Networks", chapter 3, topic "TCP/IP Name Resolution" for the full
story.

1. Newby (After 4.3.2 install, CDE LOGIN IS SLOW SLOW SLOW)

This is my dillemna. I installed AIX 4.3.2 on a RS6000 43P-140  166Mz Type
7043-140

I answered what I believed to be the correct Questions regarding Networking

I said I wanted to do it manually, so I answered the following:

Host: <Valid TCPIP Address>
Netmasks <255,255,255,0>
Named Server IP <Valid TCPIP Address for our name server>

When it finally finished, it tried to log in to CDE, but it took about 20
minutes!!

When I did a cold start, it would take longer. It seemed to take quite a
while on rpc.lockd

When I am finally in, Invoking the Application Manager takes 15 minutes
Applying a change I make in the APplication manager takes another 15 minutes

Oh by the way, while I do have network connectivity, I cant ping to named
addresses. I presume it might be network related.

my resolv.conf looks fine.
It has my domain followed by nameserver xx.xxx.xxx.xx

Any clues?
