Hello,
I can say that our RS/6000 F50 with AIX 4.2.1 does the same thing, and as
it always has done that (or similar) I have to think that "it's not a
problem" but the "normal" situation (though you don't like to wait)

Funny, I was just browsing "Aix Survival Guide" by Andreas Siegert
and there on page 318 "Hanging on LED 581".  THis occurs when
/etc/rc.net is run to configure tcp/ip into the kernal.  The work
around is
NSORDER=local,bin
in /etc/rc.net
There are other fixes.  Buy the book.
You do it today, you'll feel better tomorrow.

This book should be mandatory reading fo any AIX sysadmin.

I had a similar problem. I solved it by creating the file netsvc.conf with
the line:

hosts=local,dns

That means that it will search the /etc/hosts before it tries to use DNS.

PS sorry if this is duplicate message, I don't remember if I already
answered this question.
