newby needs help

Dear all,

I am using an IBM RS/6000 with AIX4.2.
Unfortunately this machine has no system administrator which leaves me
puzzling on my own about various problems.
The first one is:
1: Ever so often when I use VI then I cannot edit the file, because
there is no space left. Because I don't know what else to do I delete
regularly three big files which are located in /var/tmp (dead.letter
dpid2.log     snmpd.log). However, this seems not a very good solution.
HAs anybody got an idea what is going on here?
Second problem:
2: Where can I get information about running samba on an IBM. It has to
be simple enough to be understood by somebody totally unfamiliar with
AIX.

Any help/hints/ideas are greatly appreciated,
Meike

Yes, if you look at the contents of the file, there is a problem (Ususally
bad domain, or bad trap, or something like that.) with the snmpd and dpid2
daemons.

run stopsrc -s snmpd
    stopsrc -s dpid2

To kill the daemons.  Comment them out of /etc/rc.net to prevent them from
starting next reboot.

http://www.samba.org has documentation.  It runs the same (pretty much)
on all Unix platforms.  I recommend installing it from source, and compiling
it yourself (it's really easy. configure <OPTION_FLAGS> ; make ; make install)

IBM's vision is apparently to make IBM hardware "scream with Microsoft
software" --The Register, http://www.theregister.co.uk/990927-000003.html

I have visions of screaming with (at and about) Microsoft software, too.

1. Newby needs help getting to the WWW from Linux

I have Slackware 2.3 (I know it's old).
Got it set up without much fuss (note: I use OS/2, so fuss is not new to me).
I want to set up to dial into my ISP and surf.
Could a samaritan mail me with some quick steps for getting Linux set up for the WWW? So far,
I have been able to get DIP to dial my provider. After that ... what? I don't seem to have
a browser on my disc.

'Ppreciate any help.
