Printer access - users cannot print

Post by Al William » Wed, 29 Nov 2000 04:00:00

Hi All,

Excuse my last post...Here's what you should have received:

I have encountered a problem where only root can access  and
querry print queues.
for other users the system returns error message following:

Quote:> lpstat

enq: (FATAL ERROR): Cannot exec digester /usr/lib/lpd/digest.
enq: errno = 13: Permission denied
enq: (FATAL ERROR): Error from digester /usr/lib/lpd/digest,
status = 16384, rv
= 18834.

The same is true when a user sends a job to any printqueue.

I have checked the refrenced file and directory and found no
inconsistencies with permissions and location.  Any ideas??

Give Thanks!!

Printer access - users cannot print

Permissions problems could be with /etc/qconfig, with /usr/sbin/qdaemon,
with /usr/bin/enq and so forth.  Check those permissions.  The quick and
dirty method would be to upgrade the bos.rte.printers and printers.rte
filesets to overwrite the printer related files and correct the
offending permissions, or to overwrite those filesets with the same
level from your installation media.  It is certainly a printing
permission problem, but it could be on any of a large number of files.

Regards,
Paul

Printer access - users cannot print

Thanks for you suggestions Paul; hadn't gotten back to the list until today
;-(

check permissions and also compared the printing system files on another 4.3
box;  I finally reinstalled the bos.rte.printers filesets and now, although
general users are now able to check the status of a printqueue, still they
cannot submit jobs to printqueues.  The  new error is:

Quote:> enq -P payday test.o

enq: (FATAL ERROR): Error in msgsnd.  Errno = 13.
enq: errno = 13: Permission denied

Fortunately this not my production system, and It is my intention to refresh
the base system, and upgrade  to ML 4330-06.  Hopefully this should revert
integrety to the system.  Meantime, any further suggestion are welcome.

Give Thanks!!

1. cannot set up UMASK or groups so that users from one group cannot access other groups

Hi

First let me describe what I would like to set up to clarify things:

Scenario:

I would like to set up 3 groups, lets call them A, B, C. Users from A should
have access files created by users in B or C. Users in B or C cannot access
files created by users in A. Also users in B or C should not have access to
each others files.

How would I set up Umask to handle this? I've tried to create a primary
group for all and secondary groups to reflect the permissions I'm after, but
to no avail.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Jon
