RS/6000 - can't boot from CD-ROM

Post by Rainer Frei » Thu, 15 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hello,

I have an RS/6000 43P (Model 7043, Firmware Version TIG 97251).

Some of our consultants have testet the Tivoli Security Manager
and so I want to do a fresh install (from the scratch).

In mormal mode the machine just boots fine and is useable. However
when I try to boot from the AIX CD-ROM to re-install the OS the
machine stops booting and the LED panel shows c031.

So it seems that the machine can't find its console. Pressing
any key on the keyboard shows no result.

Any idea how to boot from CD-ROM?

thanks

On the model 43P you need the Service Management diskette to change the
bootdevice.

Hope this helps,

Alfred

Sorry but you do NOT need the diskette on the later 43Ps like
the 7024. You can press F1 during the firmware initialization
and from there you can change the boot device.

What is your console? If it is a graphics console, ensure you have
a level of AIX installation media that supports the graphics adapter
you are using, otherwise, you may need a driver diskette or install
with a TTY terminal and then ensure you have the driver installed to
get the LFT to work.

The problem is NOT to change the boot device (I CAN "boot" from
CD-ROM) - the bootlist command works without any problems.

The problem is that the machine doesn't recognize the console when
booting from CD-ROM. I can press any key but there's no reaction.
The only keys which show any reaction are the power switch and
the reset button.

cheers

Rainer,
what type of console are you working with? Any special graphics adapter by
chance? You may try an ASCII terminal (or a PC) connected to the serial
port during boot/install.

RS/6000 - can't boot from CD-ROM

Post by Rainer Frei » Thu, 22 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hello,

thanks for your tips (I got some). IBM Support just confirmed that
the driver for the GTX120P Graphics adapter is NOT on the AIX 4.2.1
CD-ROM!

It's hard to believe that IBM ships a (standard) system you can't
simply boot from CD-ROM :-(

So I have to look for the right cable and a PC to use as ASCII
terminal.

cheers

1. Booting RS/6000 from CD-ROM: Fixed!

Several weeks back I posted to the group regarding my futile attempts to
get my 7012, RS/6000 36T to boot from CD-ROM. I'd tried the Toshiba
3301, Toshiba 3401 and IBM CR-503-C models - all to no avail.
Finally, after hearing of positive reports from users of older Plextor
drives I bought a Plextor PX-43CS model (4X) as much through desperation
as anything else. I guessed it might be about the right vintage and I'm
very happy to report that it booted first time and is happily assisting
the installation of AIX 4.1.5 right now.

Thanks to Hajo and Alberto for their helpful suggestions.
Rather than consume bandwidth now, I'll be happy to provide by email
details to anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation.
Cheers,
Steve
