RS/6000 - Donated Machine

RS/6000 - Donated Machine

Post by Paul Rudol » Sat, 14 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Our Non-Profit organization recently aquired an IBM RS/6000 model 7010 by
donation, assumably in working condition, yet we have not been able to get
this dinasore (misspelling intended) running.  Additional equipment includes
a 6091 monitor and a 7207 tape drive.

The front panel shows a 1.44 floppy and a CD-ROM drive.  All look OEM.

After removing the rear and side covers and inspecting the cards, it seems
to have an 855 Meg and 355 Meg SCSI hard drives.  Internal cards are a video
card (RGB), TokenRing card, Ethernet Card (assumed), and a graphics input
card.  3 RAM cards (assuming 2-8 meg and 1-16 meg.

I'm assuming the machine was initially set up to run from a terminal (which
we probably didn't receive with the 4 truckloads of donated equipment.)  We
did however, get some manuals, diskettes and tapes for this unit.

On with the problem.

When booting with the key in any of the 3 positions, the machine seems to go
through all of the normal routines, but stops with a readout of "551".  At
this time, there is no video display.  I'm assuming the machine is looking
for a non-existant peripheral device.

I have found a package of diskettes, and some tapes.  One package of
diskettes were labeled "BOSBOOT", "DISPLAY", and "MAINTENANCE", so I
attempted a boot from diskette.  Seems to work ok, but can't seem find the
correct information or commands to get the machine to boot on it's own.

My AIX experience is non-existant, and have very little linux experience.

Any help or instruction on getting this machine operable would be deeply
appreciated.

response and tips to get this machine working.

Seems as if the bootdisk had more than a few files wiped out.  I've managed
to find a bootable tape, and am in the process of re-installing and
hopefully, getting this machine in operation.

Now, off to the docs to learn more about the 6000 and AIX.

I take this to mean you have a 7013, not a 7010; a 7010 is an X-station
not a server.

This is also indicative of a 7013-520; it is the only RS/6000 box IBM
made that will accept an odd number of memory cards and house the old
857 MB and 355 MB hard drives internally.

A LED with 551 means that your system is trying to IPL and varyon
(activate) a boot device.
It could be that both of the hard drives were part of the root volume
group and one is bad or that your boot logical volume is damaged.

To use these disks, insert the one marked BOSBOOT into the floppy drive,
turn the key to the SERVICE position (far right) and turn the machine
on.  It will read the disk and start booting the machine; when you see
"c07" on the LED, it means it wants the next diskette.  Eject the
BOSBOOT diskette, insert the DISPLAY disk next, wait until "c07" is
displayed on the LED again, eject the DISPLAY diskette, then insert the
MAINTENANCE disk last.  This should boot the system into maintenance
mode.

It sounds like you may want to reload the system from the ground up.
Your 7207 is a 1/4" tape unit; look for any tapes in the collection you
got that say "Boot Tape" or "LPP tape".  You might have a AIX install
tape that you can use to reload the system.  Also look for the AIX
version numbers (3.1.5, 3.2.3, 3.2.4, or 3.2.5) on the tapes; AIX 3.x
was the only version of AIX for the RS/6000s that was shipped on the
1/4" cartridges.

If you can find a boot tape, drop me a note.
Have a great day!

1. RS/6000 error msgs (Was: Re: RS/6000 survey - will post summary)

[LANG=En_US]  ksh: kjj: 0403-016 Cannot find or open the file.
[LANG=C]      ksh: kjj: cannot open

[LANG=En_US]  0506-764 ln: /tmp: Cannot use this command with a directory.
[LANG=C]      ln : </tmp> directory

Canonicalizing all the error msgs by assigning them numbers and more
verbose explanations isn't such a bad idea, but it will hardly make
the system usable by secretaries. It does nothing to prevent an
accidental "rm *" or hide the details of the filesystem from the user.
Secretaries will run Motif and shrink-wrapped applications in
which case they will probably never [want to] use Unix shells. And they
shouldn't need to.
The big gain here will be made by IBM SEs who will now be able to
look up customers' complaints by the error number.

I haven't heard about IBM shipping *anything* on a Powerstation
yet. You can buy SunOS 4.1 *today* which is B2 certified.
And AT&T is advertising System V/MLS which is B1
certified -- I don't know if it's shipping yet.
If security is important to you, you sure don't want to go with
a measly C2 rated system.
