SSA Raid Array and AIX Upgrading

SSA Raid Array and AIX Upgrading

Post by Alex Robinso » Tue, 25 Jan 2000 04:00:00

We are doing a new and complete install of AIX 4.3.3 on an F50 with IBM Raid
Arrays and SSA attached disks that is currently running AIX 4.2.1. Currently
we have some non-rootVGs defined from PVs that are made up of SSA Raid
arrays.

What happens when we upgrade? My past experience has been only with SCSI
disks where a PV mapped directly to a physical disk. WIth the SSA Raid
arrays, a PV is made up of logical disks which in turn are made up of the
physical SSA disks. How will the newly installed AIX recognise the previous
configuration, i.e when I do an 'importvg hdiskN'?

1. Re-using SSA disks previously members of a SSA RAID array

Somewhere under the SSA Raid menu entry in the smit|Devices menu,
there is a point that will let you change the usage of a SSA disk.
If a disk has been a member of an array, it is probably listed as
'Array candidate disk' or 'Hot Spare'.
Change that to 'AIX system disk' for all the disks, and you should
be able to re-use the units as normal SSA disks.
