TAR not working

Post by Guido Dolc » Sun, 01 Jun 1997 04:00:00

If I use tar to exctract files (e.g. tar -x netscape.tar) nothing
happens but for the prompt disappering.I must kill the process, which
actually isn't working, otherwise I'm stopped.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks to anyone mailing

tar -xvf netscape.tar

The 'v' qualifier will allow you to see what is being extracted from
your tar file as it happens.

Guido Dolci,
Tar, used without the f switch thinks it's getting the data from a tape.
You have to tell tar that it's working with a file...

Yet shorter:    tar xvf netscape.tar

You never need the hyphen with tar.

As long as we're looking for shorter, use:

tar xf netscape.tar

You don't need the v either.  I generally, only use the v with the t
switch and not x or c.

1. Linux Tar Not Working If Not SU

Hello,

I certainly read the FAQ but found no answer to this question.  I use
the GNU tar often and here is the problem.  Whenever I use tar:

                tar cvf /dev/fd1 libg++-2.4.tar.Z

I got this problem:

tar: can't open /dev/fd1 : Bad file number

I have to go into su to dump a tar file on my disketts.

Anyone out there can give me some clue on this problem.  My Linux is
patch level pl13.

Thanks very much in advance,
