1. why passwd generated by my program is shorter than that generated by passwd program

I use crypt function in perl--equal to crypt(3)--to generat crypted text

but the generated text length is only 13 bytes

otherwise, I thinks the clear text is only the first 8 bytes be used

becuse I have to input the exactly first 8 bytes of my password to pass the
authentication

why ?
