Terminfo/termcap

Post by Sam Bassett R » Sat, 27 Jan 1990 05:52:16

Is there a PD utility to translate between 'termcap' and
'terminfo' formats?  In administering an Ultrix system, I have gotten
fairly familiar with termcap, but we are getting in a lot of SGI Iris 4D
machines which use terminfo.
I could hack a translation if TFM were more specific about what
the format of the terminfo file is, but the docs on the SGI machine (the
only SysV box I have access to) are unspecific to absent . . .

Some systems come with a program "captoinfo" which is supposed to perform
the conversion you need.  Check around your SysV system to see if it
is around.  It is supposed to be in all System V Rel 3.2+ systems.

Terminfo/termcap

Yup -- it's there, but the problem is that I need to define the SGI
Iris 4D-25 screen (for which I have a terminfo entry) to a VAX 11/750
(which uses termcap).

Terminfo/termcap

Here's a summary of what i found out a while back about converting
and finding termcap/terminfo enties.

1) Modern SysVR3.2 (>2.0) have what you need as standard commands.

captoinfo  -- for what it says
infocmp    -- a close look shows the -C will output a termcap version
                   of a terminfo entry

2) For those who have a Sun the System V compatiability cmds (optionally
installed) will have both captoinfo and infocmp.

3) PD shell scripts that do a captoinfo are available at archives. This
might be useful for those on older sysV 2.0 systems and anything that
   did'nt have captoinfo.
( simtel20.army.mil  is one archive that has it,i believe)

4) None are perfect. My captoinfo conversion worked fine, some error
mesgs. but the resultant entry was ok.  But remember, the two
systems terminfo/termcap may do they same tasks but they do have
features that are irreplaceable in the other. If it's a strange
entry fine tuning may be neccessary. ( Maybe try the Nutshell
Terminfo/termcap book for good detail on how.)

5) The net is a wonderful way to start. If the various termcap/terminfo
entries sent to you aren't quite right at least you have something
to start with when you write your own.

1. GUI/UI that do Unix Curses/Terminfo/Termcap/etc (????)

hi

I was wondering if you readers could comment on preferences for GUI/UI
development toolkits like Liant C-Scape and/or Zinc that have GUI/UI
"designers" (even windows-based) that are functional yet not have "too
many clicks per UI object" that generate for Unix Curses/Terminfo/Termcap
applications???  I am familar somewhat with Liant C-Scape and have been
looking at Zinc.  I know there are some others too.  We are looking at
a higher level platform (like Galaxy) for GUI work, but still have some
requirements for Unix and DOS text work.

Your comments would be GREATLY appreciated!

Many thanks!

Mark
