Q: naming/cataloging tape archives?

Q: naming/cataloging tape archives?

Post by Steve Stoddar » Wed, 06 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I am learning how to store daily archives on non-rewinding tape using
crontab and pax.  It's working, but I'm still wondering about the
following:

1.  Is there a way to name or label each tape archive?   I'm searching
the pax and mt man pages, but I haven't found a way to label individual
archives.

2.  I'd like to create searchable files of the tape archives to help me
locate the relevant backup.  My approach (during creation of the
archive) is to pipe 'find' into 'tee' to create a dated file of the
output from find, then pipe it into pax to create the tape archive.  Is
there a better way to document archives?

Thanks

The pax/tar/cpio utilities don't really support the notion of
tape labels.  You can add your own label with something along
the lines of:
  echo "TAPE 001 BACKUP 1999-10-07" | dd obs=80 >/dev/nst0

Or you can create a "LABEL" file which you force pax (or
whatever) to write as the first file to be saved to the tape.

How about using the "-v" option:
  find ... | pax -wv >/dev/nst0 2>dump.`date +%Y%m%d`

1. Formatting tapes with an Archive 5945 tape drive

I have an Archive 5945 (QIC-24) tape drive with an Emulex MT-02
controller hooked up to my Seagate ST-01 SCSI host adapter in my PC.
(Not very modern equipment huh? ;-)

I'd like to format some QIC-24 tapes so I can make some backups
under Linux. But, AFAIK, noone has created anything that will format
tapes under Linux.

Does anyone know of any DOS software that will do the format with my
equipment??? Where can I get it???

Thanks!

Jim
