Question about UUCP via a terminal server (Annex 3)

Post by John Hensl » Fri, 01 May 1992 07:10:03

I'm trying to set up a UUCP connection to a machine behind an Annex 3 terminal
server. I got the chat script working, so my machine calls the remote site up,
negotiates the Annex's CLI to get to the other host, and uucico starts up fine.
Everything works great until uucico finishes up, when the Annex gives its CLI
prompt again, leaving the modem connected. We can't set our modem's inactivity
timer, because there are times when our support team needs to be idle when
dialed out. So this is a Bad Thing. Is there any way, short of getting some
uucico source and kludging a hangup into it, to do anything once the
conversation proper is complete?

Thanks for wasting valuable time reading news when you should be getting
something useful done . . . . :)

Set the cli_inactivity value to immeadiate.  Then instead of going back
to the cli prompt it dumps/resets the port.

Hope this helps.

The best solution is to have the calling host shut down the modem so that
it hangs up the line.  This should be possible via control lines to the
modem.

Where this is not possible, we solved the problem (for an Annex II) by
having the calling uucp started up from a shell script.  After the calling
uucico terminates, the shell script sleeps for a short period, then writes
a "\nhangup\n" to the port.  CLI should then honor the hangup command
and disconnect.

1. connecting sysvr4 machines via an annex terminal server

we have encountered a problem in trying to use tip or cu on a sysvr4
workstation, which then dials in to an annex terminal server and thence
tries to telnet to a sysvr4 machine on the same network as the terminal
server

we are able to successfully log in to the annex, but then when we try
the telnet, we get the usual
login:
prompt, but the carriage returns are not properly recognized.  instead of
going to the next line and giving me a
Password:
prompt, the cursor goes to the start of the
login:
line.  if i try a ctrl_j (or maybe it was ctrl_m; i forget, alas), i DO
get a
Password:
prompt, but i am not able to successfully log in because either the
username or password (or both) is misread, presumably because of the
carriage return machinations.

all of this works fine if i dial in from a sunos 4.x machine to a sysvr4
machine, and also if i dial in from a sysvr4 machine to a sunos 4.x
machine.  it isn't specific to solaris, because i have the same problem
with a riscos machine connecting to an irix 5.3 machine

has anyone else encountered this, and can you give me some idea what i
need to change to make things work?

thanks,
